FDX/Unified DOCSIS

fmd · 2025-02-13T20:05:09+00:00

While we wait for the announcement that N+X deployment has officially begun... Unified is the new version of FDX that has downstream going all the way to 1.8 GHz (currently limited by old taps). The return still stops at 684 MHz. Comcast has presented this spectrum layout to begin with: This is sufficient to offer symmetrical 2 Gbps. When more of the legacy channels go away, higher speeds can be offered. 3.1 modems that get FDX-L (limited) firmware can use the FDX channels.

fmd The MoCA filter has no impact on enabling OFDM in the same spectrum as OFDMA.

No but it’s a hindrance in utilizing all the way out to 1218 MHz, what the amps capacity is.

Maybe Comcast Business could utilize that additional 218 MHz, they are professionally installed anyway.

Man today I noticed the second contractor Xfinity used, Rocky Communications Inc, didn’t exactly do such a hot job replacing the node/amp housings in my neighborhood.

Besides completely forgetting to replace a number of the old vertical style housings they left several housing open or loosely covered to were you can see the lines coming up from beneath. They’re not all at water tight. Plus anyone can easily come along and remove those covers completely. Definitely some shoddy workmanship.

Anyways it looks like they moved onto working in the next closest neighborhood as of Friday.

Maintenance for FDX nodes only:

Ah, clues!

I have a 1:30 am PST 8/12 for my node still on mid-split.

When they replaced all those ground doghouses in my neighborhood I don’t think they switched out the amps for FDX anyways. Unless there now is a way to swap new modules into the Arris Starline amps without taking the entire node offline to do so. The plant would have to be self healing I would think.

I did notice they opened up some of housing they didn’t replace for some reason. As mentioned above they left the covers on several of those wide open lol

I got the same maintenance notice

One for 8/11/2026 and one last night for 8/10/2026 @1am

Still on Sub-split here though, no Mid-split speeds as yet

Guess will see what happens in coming days or weeks or months whatever it ends up being

Do show at end of Downstream channels CH 193
But no idea if i’m on a Sub-split Node still, or Mid-split node and its just not activated yet lol

Speeds are still only up to 40Mb upload

FCC Broadband Map does show Mid-split Green Dots when i filter on there for the Condos behind this Complex, but nothing in this complex as yet.

Guess i’ll get Mid-split or FDX whenever time comes, i stopped worrying as much on maintenance windows as i did in the past lol

I wish FCC maps would update more frequently. Where I’m at in Northern California they are about a year behind.

Essentially for me they are complete unreliable atm. I found you have to actually check various addresses with Xfinity/other ISPs to see what speeds and services are available.

This is from a reddit user. The bonding is not complete though. He is missing OFDM. He is also capped at 1.5 Gbps down (there are multiple examples of that going around too). He gets the full 2 Gbps up. We can wonder, if he is N+X.

I am one of these users that is running this channel plan. I believe based on communication with the techs I am N+1. No MoCa filter, confirmed by myself and 3 techs now.

Getting the 1500 down and 2300 up.

Escalation ticket has been open for 50 days and while corporate escalations has been communicating they have no answers other then it’s an issue in their equipment. As you mentioned there are now a bunch of people reporting the same issue on Reddit in a bunch of different markets.

We’ve also had like 10 FDX only maintenance windows in that 50 days with multiple outages but still no improvement. We actually had maintenance last night and we’ve now gone from 7 DS channels to 6 DS channels with a single OFDM still at 90000000.

Clearly somebody knows what’s really going on but they simply are not communicating well or they are intentionally not telling us what’s really going on.

jsterling It’s all very complicated and complex engineering just to say they don’t have to run fiber to the home. Keep everyone posted.

Yea we still have a bunch of those old amps scattered throughout Stockton, Some of them are missing the dog house cover, including one that got hit by a car, and is still all smashed up 2 weeks later. From what I’ve been seeing around Stockton, they are just swapping out the old ones with the new CommScope amps. They still haven’t replaced the old amps on my street yet, it’s been crickets, no upgrades going on around Stockton lately.

I saw a article back in July 30, 2026 talking about this, Congress suddenly cares about broadband maps. It passed the Senate, I don’t know if anything will ever come of it?

California came out with there own Interactive Broadband Map, but they never bothered updating since December 2024. Seems like the State wasted money on something that had potential, and then turned around and pulled the plug on it?

jsterling you only have 1 ofdm downstream? when they moved me to symmetrical speeds i only had 8 downstream legacy channels too, but there was 2 ofdm downstreams

jsterling

videomatic3 Yeah, it’s weird. It went from 6 legacy channels and 1 OFDM when FDX was first available and after last nights maintenance it’s 5 legacy and 1 OFDM. 1500 Mbps with both though.

Still have 4 legacy and 4 OFDMA on the Upstream which pull 2300Mbps all day.

cypherstream

jsterling 4 ofdma upstream wow so that’s like high split, to 204 MHz or something? Maybe higher…. 384?

videomatic3

cypherstream
ive had it for a while.
its 3 96mhz wide channels and a narrower one, idk exactly. and since having all this upload capacity, ive had 0 issues with congestion.

jsterling

cypherstream Same here. I can push 2300 Mbps at any time of day.

I’m actually wondering if the new housing are actually the city forcing Xfinity to replace them for visual reasons. Roseville, CA speeds a lot tax dollars on similar enforcements and city beautification projects.

Lol I can actually see Xfinity responding by using a second rate contractor to do the job. All this doesn’t explain the node split prep work by a different contracting company though(The guys that actually did a good job).

fmd Another new config after last night’s maintenance:

Channel 28 wasn’t there until I powered cycle the gateway. Went from 27 at 813 MHz to 193 at 900 MHz.
Powered cycled again, and there is no ID 28 anymore. Primary Channel Is Now 813 MHz.

Looks like more D3.0 Downstream QAM’s were cleared out of the FDX band.

Edit: Looks like there is enough RF Spectrum to deploy FDX on my N+X HFC plant.

cypherstream

videomatic3 Highest one is 297 MHz so thats even higher than Charter’s “High Split” which is 5-204 MHz. So thats pretty cool. Also explains why Charter’s top upload is 1 gbps but yet yours is pushing past 2gbps.

There is so much engineering to make this work and its neat to see it in action.

videomatic3

cypherstream
when i had the 2gbit tier yes pushing 2gbps was all day long just like jsterling.
when the 50 dollar a month came along for 5 years 1gbps i jumped on it. cant justify needing 2gbps. only had it before just to post on here lol. and the prices were much higher so the % difference between 1 gig and 2 gig was smaller, so may as well.
i was torn between 50 a month and 70 a month between 1 gig and 2 gig 5 year deal, but… i just felt like comcast earns 50 a month from me i guess.

fmd

hex0101 So you’ve lost the lower OFDM - because the FDX OFDMA channels have been enabled? You may now be part of the missing OFDM club. 🙂

cypherstream

fmd yeah seems like a bug that’s happening everywhere.
