Comcast’s partial rebuild in my neighborhood in Purcellville is going extremely slowly. Verizon continues to suck up customers.
The only change after a few months is a giant figure-8 loop of fiber on top of the new hand hole over at the front where all the utilities enter. Looks like pretty thick fiber, so they are actually future proofing the last portion of the last mile (good).
Comcast dropped pricing. Verizon has sustained their new-FiOS build pricing almost a year in which is $10 cheaper than FiOS in established markets, with a 5 year price lock, and throwing freebies at you like TVs or a Nintendo Switch.
Verizon is gambling that their service quality will keep you on their network once you switch, and thus handing out free electronics on top of a very expensive fiber build is actually financially feasible. And I think they are on to something with that strategy - 100% uptime since it was installed for me last winter. And to be blunt, I expect 99.9999% uptime from an organization that is descended from Ma Bell (and they might actually meet that expectation in 2026!).
