Zenit_IIfx FTTP is FTTP and it’s clear when they are running new F1 trunk for *PON
AT&T may just use the existing F1 fiber going to the existing VRAD for me, they ran it back in 2010 when U-Verse was installed in the neighborhood and fiber had to be pulled into the neighborhood. Fiber optic cable with splice enclosure up on the bottom telco strand. Internet Air became available like 2 years ago and they stopped selling the VDSL. Cabinet is still there with what looks like 2 red lights on the side. Maybe that is the battery backup.
I know they have done forced migrations for copper customers to Internet Air.
In PON areas, the actual DSLAM VRAD cabinets were removed entirely. Noticed some of them gone in my area. Along with the aerial electric drop that was running to it.
crucialcolin Maybe Xfinity corp doesn’t want any plant work taking place such as node splits, amp, swaps, etc at the beginning of the work week.
In my area, Monday- Friday is work. Maintenance and upgrades are never scheduled on the weekends or over certain holidays though. My node split happened on a Tuesday. However, each contractor can have a different agreement with Comcast in regards to when work will be completed. The NOC also likely schudules the node cutovers and may only want a certain numbers of nodes upgraded per day across the entire Comcast footprint. In some cases, crews out in the field may need to call the NOC for support if any issues arise including with RPD registration or if cable modems are not coming back online after cutover.
Zenit_IIfx Wondering if FDX with N+0 splits, or if it’s EPON at this point.
Probably HFC node split, and it does not necessarily have to be N+0. My plant is still N+2 or N+3 post FDX upgrades.
Comcast will run fiber deeper into the plant (typically performed by contractor). Then terminate the fiber into a fiber optic splice enclosure. Inside of the plastic housing is a splice tray. Then Comcast will follow-up with sending out emails 7 days ahead of time informing customers of the next-gen enhanced network upgrades. When upgrade day arrives, work will begin in the morning between 6-9.
Scope:
Fiber already run by the time upgrade day arrives. New nodes were already put in place for node-split. So,
Cut out the old node, and activate new node. Register RPD’s to establish communication with the vCMTS.
Cut out legacy amps. Install new FDX amps and register them.
Balance HFC plant for proper signal levels and operation.
Cool to watch it all come together. Different phases of the upgrade process.
AT&T’s next step is to run fiber on the poles and through some conduit as a part of the plant is underground. (So is Comcast)
A new concrete pad was poured and the primary flexibility point cabinet has been installed next to the existing telephone cross-box. Technicians will go to this box during the installation process to connect the individual fiber feeding the home to the appropriate port that is on the work order. The engineering team labeled my friends address wrong so the tech had to use an optical fault locator (was plugged into the fiber that was inside of the home) to track down the correct port at the cabinet (get in van and drive back to the PFP). The gateway refused to activate unless it was on the correct PON splitter. Once corrected, activation was successful.
