Current details:
Potent spring ice storm likely.

What:
Significant ice accretion from freezing rain, with general amounts of 5 to 15 mm. Accretion amounts in excess of 20 mm are possible over some areas.
Local snowfall and ice pellet accumulations of 5 to 15 cm, mainly for central and northeastern Ontario.
Possible utility outages.
Slippery surfaces and broken tree branches from ice build-up.

When:
Late Friday through Monday.

Additional information:
Confidence is increasing in a widespread, prolonged freezing rain event over portions of southern and northeastern Ontario. The swath of maximum ice accretion is still uncertain at this point, but confidence is highest for areas of central and eastern Ontario between Parry Sound and Kingston. Warnings will be issued as the event draws nearer.

Models are firming up now regarding the scope of the freezing rain areas. For the GTA and West, as well as Niagara, it’s going to be an all-rain event. Some freezing rain may briefly mix in away from the lakes in area 1. Since the freezing rain is preceding a warm front, temps will increase Saturday PM from SW to NE so areas 2 and 3 will not see continuous freezing rain from onset. but accretions will still be significant. What’s critical is now far NE the freezing line ends up, as it will determine when and for how long the transition to rain happens.

Additional Information:
There is a risk of freezing rain tonight, possibly into Saturday morning, as temperatures will be near the freezing mark. A second and more significant round of freezing rain is expected Saturday night into Sunday morning as temperatures cool below the freezing mark.

Freezing rain warnings are possible as the event draws nearer.

The warm front is taking its sweet time moving NE. In the past 9 hrs, it’s retrograded 100 kms SW and is now between Chatham and Windsor. That’s why the temp in London is 1C now vs 15C at 4 AM yest. Effect of the High pressure over James Bay is more than expected.

A heads-up for April 2nd and 3rd for basically all of Ontario south of Timmins. A system will dump up to 25 mm water equivalent. Depending on how far north/south you are, that’ll be snow or rain. And if you’re really (un)lucky, some freezing rain too, not to mention possible flooding of low-lying areas. With thunderstorms expected, rainfall amounts may exceed 50 mm over some areas, particularly over southwestern Ontario. Rain will end from west to east Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.
