anyone planning on running Win10 past the end of life?

as per the title if you're going to do so how do you plan on doing security updates & patches? IIRC there were a few post on the old forum which linked to 3rd party patches. I did the Rufus bypass thing a on what I'll call a "test" system and no problem. The issue we will have is my wife's system is a 32bit system. As you all know Win11 in only in the 64bit flavor. This isn't a deal breaker but we also have an OLD Cannon Scanner that only works on the 32bit OS plus I am one of those people that live by if it works don't fix it. Wife has an old Dell Ispiron desktop that came with a 10/100 nic and the old sata drive. I updated the nic to a gig speed and upgraded her hardrive to a SSD 6 -7 years ago and it just runs and it works for her. My desktop would support a in place upgrade with the Rufus hack but as of today I'm leaning towards sticking with Win10 but that is subject to change but not for the 32bit system. So if anyone plans on going past the EOL love to hear your thoughts & tips to proceed forward on Win10

Today’s changes also disable the “start ms-cxh:localonly” command

I have one computer that I DID officially update to Windows 11 and now it is so SLOW that it is pretty much unusable even with almost nothing running on it.

Not sure what the deal is. I have three very old systems–generally 4th generation Intel CPU (from 2014) with 16GB RAM–that were very slow to boot 11–all using bypasses since unsupported–so I did an over the top keeping everything install and now they’re all running pretty well, with all now even booting pretty much within 30 seconds. Even before, all were running pretty well once getting to the desktop–with a few small exceptions the only real problem was the slow boot. I also have one newer laptop–that does support 11–and a recent fresh install of 11 on it runs very well.

In any event, in general, I agree with you that there is a special place in hell for them.

Appreciate the suggestion, as it happens I do have that installed, it’s about the only external program I have now… 😉

On the same machine, BleachBit worked fine on Windows 10, but on Windows 11 it literally was taking HOURS and never even coming close to finishing. (Even with NOT wiping free space, etc). Had to remove BleachBit, never had problems with it on any other Windows system.

As far as I know Microsoft is the only company in American history that actively discourages its customers from using or purchasing its products. But, then again, when a company has a legally certified monopoly why should it care?

Whether an over the top install keeping everything will work well seems to depend on how far gone your system is. It’s worked well for me since I’ve always made the effort to keep things from getting too far out of hand, and the proof is that my current 11 has only had a few over the top ones and not a fresh one from the beginning in over 15 years with those and upgrades since from Windows 7 to 10 to 11!

thinking out loud here, if 0PATCH is for patching the OS only as the name implies I’m guessing we are now going to need a 3rd party antivirus program due to NO more virus definitions updates?

This is a truly excellent point.

I’ve seen a bunch of [conflicting] reports as to whether or not Microsoft will continue to provider AV definition updates for Windows Defender (which they now call Microsoft Defender), if the extended coverage is not purchased from Microsoft.

But you may want to consider the free version of BitDefender antivirus:

Although BitDefender has several paid products with more bells and whistles, the free version is well regarded.

I’m not sure how well their free app works but administratively Bitdefender was a nightmare for me. I will be doing everything possible next year to avoid another purchase of H&R Block tax software bundled with Bitdefender. Do they need a credit card for the free version too?

px_eliezer_ A Google search shows that Defender updates will continue until October 2028. Given that the consumer ESU ends in 2026, I assume the Defender updates are independent of that. It is a bit confusing, and some speculation is that the software itself will not be updated, but definitions will still be available.

I have a Life Time Malwarebytes License from 2014 but stopped using Malwarebytes in favor of the MS AV because some of the AV’s out there are resource hogs and the MS Antivirus just worked without laboring the system.

I’m still on the fence how I’m going to move forward. I could go with the unsupported win11 in-place upgrade on one system (my desktop), 0PATCH w/Antivirus or just an AV because Win10 has been patched 100K times over.

One possibility is that MS management at first did intend to cut them off but then relented.

An easy solution is to just seek to do manual AV updates after October 14…

I’ve gone ahead though with the Free version of BitDefender as linked earlier.

It’s actually rather nice, and one account covers 3 machines, and optional free VPN.

The Bitdefender free VPN is limited to 200MB per day and only one server, about an hour of browsing, so pretty much useless if you ask me. While paid VPNs are probably best, if you want to go the free route I’ve found RiseupVPN to be the best, with no configuration, limitations or account registration and a claim of no logging of your IP address. I don’t believe that the Windows version has a kill switch, but beggars can’t be choosers. There is a bug in the uninstaller that can be fixed manually by deleting a few characters in the middle of the file name. I haven’t advised them of it because to send a report you have to register.

I still have some Win 7 and Win 8.1 PCs, and I still got an AV update less than a month ago.

This is from Win 8.1. And while this is not indicative of future actions, I think there’s a good likelihood that AV updates will be available for a while.
