anyone planning on running Win10 past the end of life?

as per the title if you're going to do so how do you plan on doing security updates & patches? IIRC there were a few post on the old forum which linked to 3rd party patches. I did the Rufus bypass thing a on what I'll call a "test" system and no problem. The issue we will have is my wife's system is a 32bit system. As you all know Win11 in only in the 64bit flavor. This isn't a deal breaker but we also have an OLD Cannon Scanner that only works on the 32bit OS plus I am one of those people that live by if it works don't fix it. Wife has an old Dell Ispiron desktop that came with a 10/100 nic and the old sata drive. I updated the nic to a gig speed and upgraded her hardrive to a SSD 6 -7 years ago and it just runs and it works for her. My desktop would support a in place upgrade with the Rufus hack but as of today I'm leaning towards sticking with Win10 but that is subject to change but not for the 32bit system. So if anyone plans on going past the EOL love to hear your thoughts & tips to proceed forward on Win10

The Bitdefender free VPN is limited to 200MB per day and only one server, about an hour of browsing, so pretty much useless if you ask me. While paid VPNs are probably best, if you want to go the free route I’ve found RiseupVPN to be the best, with no configuration, limitations or account registration and a claim of no logging of your IP address. I don’t believe that the Windows version has a kill switch, but beggars can’t be choosers. There is a bug in the uninstaller that can be fixed manually by deleting a few characters in the middle of the file name. I haven’t advised them of it because to send a report you have to register.

I have a Life Time Malwarebytes License from 2014 but stopped using Malwarebytes in favor of the MS AV because some of the AV’s out there are resource hogs and the MS Antivirus just worked without laboring the system.

I’m still on the fence how I’m going to move forward. I could go with the unsupported win11 in-place upgrade on one system (my desktop), 0PATCH w/Antivirus or just an AV because Win10 has been patched 100K times over.

I too have a lifetime Malwarebytes license that they were giving away in the early days (no more since they now think that they’re big shots). I wouldn’t give it up for the world. I still think it has the best detector and remover, and I’ve received some excellent support from them when I’ve gotten into jams.

takeahike It looks like bloatware now, they’ll probably offer the standard version for the lifetime license. I don’t need a vpn nor do I need a browser guard

I don’t think a lifetime license is ever coming back–just annual licenses at this point. The remover has always been and continues to be free–it’s just the real time protection that costs. We were lucky enough to get the lifetime license when they were new on the scene and needed business. I paid $24.95 for it about 20 years ago and it of course gives me the same real time protection to this day. When did you get yours and how much did you pay?

px_eliezer_ I’ve seen conflicting answers as to the Defender (AV) updates…

One possibility is that MS management at first did intend to cut them off but then relented.

I still have some Win 7 and Win 8.1 PCs, and I still got an AV update less than a month ago.

This is from Win 8.1. And while this is not indicative of future actions, I think there’s a good likelihood that AV updates will be available for a while.

If virus definitions do continue that might be enough for us.

My non-work WIN10 desktop doesn’t support Win 11, so I will use Malwarebytes, locked down and secured browsers and router’s IDS/IPS functions for security. My router also is set up to use OpenDNS for DHCP devices.

I have an old Win8.1 laptop that I will load Linux Mint on, and a work laptop at Win11. I do most of my goof-off stuff on an Android 13 128GB tablet that does quite nicely.

just_4_fun I would recommend paying for the extended support which I believe is $30.00 USD and I think their is free options as well if you meet certain condition’s.

The principal might not be worth the cost you will pay if your data gets breached and not to mention having to change all your passwords if they are saved on your computer system. I would suggest keeping your Windows 10 system offline if you do not have extended update support since online hackers will take advantage of unpatched security vulnerabilities.

toolman1990 I’d agree with you if it were the old days when a single computer was connected directly to the WAN and there was NO connection sharing via a router. We are running a firewall appliance, pfsense blocks everything by default. In addition we don’t open emails, links or attachments and from unknown sources. W10 has been patched 1K times over so we’re not hitting the panic button yet and if/when we do it will be a 3rd party solution

Both my unactivated W10 Pro. got this ESU enrollment option in their WUs in VirtualBox VM & old 2012 Intel MBP’s Bootcamp (dual boot). I was able to enroll with my old Hotmail.com e-mail address! However, my real PC’s activated W10 Pro. still doesn’t show it after today’s WUs. I wonder if it’s because I used O&O ShutUp 10++ (maybe I need to change a setting to get it?). All W10 installations are using local admin accounts and same cable Internet in USA.

antdude Ooh, finally got the ESU enrollment offer but it was weird. I have two admin accounts in my updated W10 Pro PC: Local and MS. Local didn’t see it for awhile. I logged out and switched to rarely used MS account, and still didn’t see it. I logged out and went back to my local admin account, and whoomp there it is! I rebooted and logged into MS account, and it is there too. I enrolled with it since I didn’t want my always used local stuffed non-MS account to be used. I only used empty MS account to activate online with the retail key and to save. I logged out and went back to my normal local admin account, and the enrollment option is offered. Shouldn’t it (PC) be enrolled?! It seems to be random and only account based even if it is on the same OS installation? I guess I will have to update W10 with my MS account. I don’t want to sign into my MS account with my local account. So annoying!!!!!!

antdude That is strange, I have a Junk email account which is an old Hotmail account that I think qualifies as a MS Account. I have Win10 Pro system and your post triggered my memory about the original Administrator account which was disabled at initial setup, if memory serves it was Win7 originally then upgraded to win10 . Anyway it’s just a box to uncheck to re-enable the Admin account. I’ll have to experiment later but as you said I’m not changing the way I log on or account profiles and I’m certainly not paying MS another dime

…I just initialized a new Win 11 Home laptop for a friend of mine’s mom… My recent experience has been primarily Windows 7. Did some Win 10 several years ago and have been… re-learning what I forgot over the past month. OMG, the Win 11 install was an absolute disaster. Couldn’t find what I would call common settings. Everything has moved or changed. Why do we constantly have to re-learn an almost entirely new O/S every time Microsoft issues a new Windows version?

Some reasons:

Microsoft wanted to move away from the usual desktop UI (from Win95 to Win7, call it 9x-7) to a unified new UI starting with Win 8, and then partially backtracking with Win81, etc.
Because they can, due to their dominant position in desktop OS.

Obviously, the 9x-7 desktop UI is totally unusable on phones and not very good on tablets either, but that should’ve been no reason to mess up one of the best desktop GUI ever developed and frustrate longtime users.
