anyone planning on running Win10 past the end of life?

as per the title if you're going to do so how do you plan on doing security updates & patches? IIRC there were a few post on the old forum which linked to 3rd party patches. I did the Rufus bypass thing a on what I'll call a "test" system and no problem. The issue we will have is my wife's system is a 32bit system. As you all know Win11 in only in the 64bit flavor. This isn't a deal breaker but we also have an OLD Cannon Scanner that only works on the 32bit OS plus I am one of those people that live by if it works don't fix it. Wife has an old Dell Ispiron desktop that came with a 10/100 nic and the old sata drive. I updated the nic to a gig speed and upgraded her hardrive to a SSD 6 -7 years ago and it just runs and it works for her. My desktop would support a in place upgrade with the Rufus hack but as of today I'm leaning towards sticking with Win10 but that is subject to change but not for the 32bit system. So if anyone plans on going past the EOL love to hear your thoughts & tips to proceed forward on Win10

Still using it on Solgaleo in part because haven’t had the time to back up stuff or prepare for an install of something else at the time.

Safe to say, not exactly looking forward to 11, due to how Microsoft is actively trying to make things so obnoxious. Also the precedent set by how one of its updates already killed two of my ssd’s and now seeing the other thread that broke networking so completely.

Letting ChatGPT dictate operating system code was a choice, alright. Not exactly a good one.

GoRaptors Not sure there is a solution in the traditional sense.

Had the same kind of nonsense with the education keys for stuff up to Windows 7 for myself. It would activate just fine for the install, but then stuff like such OS upgrades fail.

Hard to feel any empathy when your only viable solution is to buy one of those subsidized keys off the borderline sketchy websites out there.

Some reasons:

Microsoft wanted to move away from the usual desktop UI (from Win95 to Win7, call it 9x-7) to a unified new UI starting with Win 8, and then partially backtracking with Win81, etc.
Because they can, due to their dominant position in desktop OS.

Obviously, the 9x-7 desktop UI is totally unusable on phones and not very good on tablets either, but that should’ve been no reason to mess up one of the best desktop GUI ever developed and frustrate longtime users.

But for my wife’s Windows10 machine, I intended to buy the Microsoft extended support (ESU) just from a WAF POV.

But I just could NOT get to the Windows ESU enrollment screen despite trying various “fixes”, the site just kept spinning.

So then I got the 0Patch for HER computer too (she agreed).

Your loss, Microsoft, the 0Patch people will get the money I wanted to send you.

In truth, 0Patch is better anyway.

Microsoft’s ESU is only going to be offered for 3 years at most, it seems, whereas hopefully 0Patch will be available for several years.

Because Microsoft’s arrogance, greed, cavalier rudeness, and incompetence, is a fantastic business opportunity for 0Patch.

How about Microsoft Office?
While we’re on the subject of adopting, let’s not forget that we’re also adopting Microsoft Office 2016 and 2019 today. These products will not be getting any official security patches from Microsoft anymore, so if you keep using them it may be a good idea to secure them with our patches. A single 0patch license will cover both Windows 10 and Office patches on one computer.

The requirements based on actual power needed to run Windows 11 are basically the same as they were for Vista that was released in late November 2006, so almost any system sold with the intent of being powerful enough to run the 64-bit version or any 64-bit Windows version since then can run 11 but for the artificial barriers imposed by Microsoft. If you don’t meet Microsoft’s technical requirements, they can be bypassed to run 11 by several methods, probably the most popular of which is the Rufus bypass.

There’s no real difference between a PC that works for Windows 11 and a PC that runs Windows 10, except purely arbitrary ones imposed by Microsoft.

For those with 5 year old Windows machines who don’t feel the necessity to buy new stuff, there are dozens of well performing O/S options that don’t require hardware replacement, and even inexpensive Raspberry Pi systems for the email/browser/casual user. My lovely bride’s old Win 8 laptop now has Linux Mint Cinnamon on it, and she’s quite satisfied with it..

Windows has become so bloated with “AI” and data collecting crapola that it’s become a project just to detox all the stuff and sharing they include by default. But if users have a specific need for what is only available in the newest Windows O/S, then they now have it available in new hardware. For those who don’t, they can dump windows and keep their old hardware.

There’s only versions 1.2 and 2.0–typo I’m sure. One of the great things about being unsupported with 11 is that while you get all the Update Tuesday and other critical updates, they won’t push the major yearly ones on you, like 23H2 to 24H2 or 25H2. I just do those on my own–just the way I like it, with no surprises. See: What I learned from 3 years of running Windows 11 on “unsupported” PCs

Once Windows 11 is installed, routine software updates and app updates from the Microsoft Store are downloaded and installed on my “unsupported” systems the same way they are on my “supported” ones. There’s one exception for the PCs I’ve had running unsupported Windows 11 installs in the long term and that is that Microsoft doesn’t want to automatically download and install the yearly feature updates for Windows, so a 22H2 install will keep downloading and installing updates for as long as they’re offered, but it won’t offer to update itself to versions 23H2 or 24H2.

Steve Gibson’s tool should (should…!) prevent unwanted OS upgrades.
