For a new build next year perhaps? But if I went with it, what SMPS should I get and if I want to do 3d drawing/drafting, what video card (base model) would I look at.

I need it to house at least 5 drives + 2 SSDs, have good cable management, have reset and power buttons, ear and mid connections. It can be wider than some full towers. If it could house 6 hard drives that would be it

This would possibly be my final computer build of my life, the one that I have now has got 20 yearold case and 18 year old supply, 3 and 10 year old drives, 1 year old SSD, a 12 year old mainboard and a video card older than that. The processor and RAM is also over 12 year old now.

It will still be a Linis bux.

The mainboard needs to offer premium sound features, have at least 2.5 Gigbit, preferably 10 GBit Net work controllers, have LOTS of USB connectors, be gamer grade but not for gaming.

I want either 32 or 64 gig of RAM and at least a 10 core processor.

I hot shoe for a single drive would be nice.

I have the Fractal Define R5 case. It’s a nice case. I bought it in 2015. Not sure if they updated it since and are using the same model number.

It’s got some sound proofing material, so it’s decently quiet. It’s big, but not huge. Big enough to fit the latest high end video cards. The sound proofing material does make it a bit heavier.

On the back plate it has a spot where you can screw in 2 2.5″ SSDs. And I’d have to open it up to be sure, but I think you can do an additional 6 or 7 3.5″ drives.

It has some cable management features, but I haven’t really looked at newer cases to see what’s out there or might be better.

On mine, there are 4 USB A, but not USB C.

This mainboard, MSI MEG X670E ACE Does come with 10 gig ethernet, as well as 6E wifi. May require a possible different case due to being a eATX board however.

HooRU I have the Fractal R5 case, good case for something that needs alot of drives, I run my NAS in it. It doesn’t have USB-C 3.1 connectors on the front. You’d have to either use motherboard connections or a drive front panel replacement, but the front accessible drives are behind a door.

ElQuintron This appears to meet the requirements for storage and the usb c for @HooRU. The pictures / description is showing this case is quite modular. Very nice case.

[Side note: this would be a nice upgrade from the Antec VSK-4000 I have. But I have dual optical going on with 1 blu ray, and 1 blu ray burner.]

I’m running an MDISC BluRay Ripper/reader in the front slot and could probably fit another, but the trade-off was that I had to settle for a 280mm top mounted AIO, rather than the 420mm that I originally wanted.

Personally, I rarely use my case’s front USB ports.

I find it to be more convenient to just get a USB hub and put it on your desk. Even better than a case port, I got one with toggle switches so you can physically turn some devices on/off (like a webcam, or drawing tablet that I only use rarely, or to reset my wireless mouse dongle which dies randomly).

I think that would depend on what type of devices you are using. I don’t expect it would be noticeable for most peripherals. But if you’ve got an external drive or something that is maxing out the bandwidth of a single port, then it could.

I’m hoping to do a new build this time next year, but I already see some issues. I want a build that will last 10 years and be useful for that long as it will probably be the last build of my life. I’m 67 and at 77 I’ll likely buy something modest then and ready built.

I need a motherboard that will support 10 Gb/s Networking, Have WIFI 7, USB 4 and 2 or more M.2 SSDs. I need something that will support hard drives however, up to 5 of them and maybe a dvd burner for music mostly. I want something 12 core or better, 32 Gig RAM or 64.

The boards on Newegg are over 500 and up to over a grand. Phew! Maybe that will go down next year?

Most enthusiast boards have 3 to 4 slots. Some have 5.

The only board I see from Asus that’s a decent board is the ASUS ProArt Z890-CREATOR WIFI - Intel Z890 chipset, 5 x M.2 slots, WiFi 7, and USB4. If you want to go AMD that’s a no-go. I only recommend it because I’ve worked with that board before and it’s a good quality board.

You left out if you wanted to go AMD or Intel…

Why? Are you copying massive amounts of data on a regular basis?

10 Gbps, especially for one machine, seems overkill. But there are exceptions. The bottleneck to the internet would be a significantly slower ISP connection. Now, as you’ve indicated, on an internal LAN there is a case to be made for moving massive data between clients. This could be for large amounts of specilaized media (HD video). For example from/to LAN-based NAS storage.

For comparison, for ordinary things like video steaming (4K (UHD)), the max required bandwidth per stream is approximately 25-30 Mbps.
