1) Does it bother you when you’ve ordered a product, and the company knows the shipping will be somewhat slow, yet they send you multiple requests to review the product (which you have not received yet!) Sort of rubbing it in! 2) Does it bother you when you’re driving on a multiple-lane road, and the driver in the adjacent lane (to your left) just sits and sits in your blind spot? Even though they have room to maneuver in their lane, but you can’t maneuver in your own lane? Thanks. 😉

Damn, I’ll have to drive everywhere in first gear. This is not going to be fun.

Apart from that, the ruling about what is distracting will get a bit vague - ‘tuning the radio’ is no more distracting for me than, say, shifting gear. This is because (a) I drive a no-screens-UI car, and (b) I have physical buttons assigned to anything I want to listen to while driving.

takeahike My father always told me “always keep your eyes on the road,” and it took me many years of being a licensed driver before I really appreciated what he meant.

I was stopped over in Ft Myers by an officer who thought I was texting at a red light, which in Florida is not allowed.

He walked up to my side and the backup walked to the passenger side so I rolled both windows down, his first question was, was I texting my answer was no my phones are down there on the floor, he noticed my laptop sitting in a docking station and asked what’s that for I explained mapping so I can figure how to get to where I want to go, next question are you a LEO, no I am not a LEO.

I handed my license registration and insurance card, he asked where is your insurance card, it’s laminated to the back of the registration, he turned it over and walked back to his car.

A few minutes later he came back and asked me if I knew I do not have a driving record, that being his system showed I have never been issued a citation, which he found to be strange.

Ok, ok, I’ll make an exception for shifting gears, especially because you can do that without looking at what you are doing that is normally associated with activity done with your hands, like dialing a number or even picking it out from the speed dial. Even with your type of radio generally an impermissible glance is necessary that is not the case with shifting, so not allowed.

Speaking of officers and traffic courts, I have lived in NYC and the LA area, and the difference is like night and day. In NYC, they’ll pull you over and are nasty as hell, but 80-90% of the time they will let you go. Whenever I went to traffic court there I won virtually every time, whether I told the truth or not. In California, they are as polite and respectful as imaginable, but they give you a ticket almost every time. It goes something like “why yes sir, why certainly sir, I’m going to give you a citation sir.” And when you go to court, you always lose, not matter how good your case might be. I won only once because the first thing I told the judge was that I did not recognize the officer and the officer also said that he did not recognize me, so after the judge asked the DA whether he thought the case should go forward and the DA said that without any independent recollection by the officer in his opinion it couldn’t the judge dismissed the case, but then only after suggesting that it could even still go forward if the ticket clearly spoke for itself as to what happened. If it had gone forward on that basis I wonder what the ticket would have said in response to my constitutional right to cross-examine the witnesses against me under the Confrontation Clause of the Sixth Amendment to the U. S. Constitution.

This doesn’t have to be quite so distracting.
Cell phones, while moving, could automatically switch to half-duplex mode.
It’s much safer.
Full-duplex conversation is inherently distracting.
Legislators, however, value business contributions far more than lives.
( And yes, texting is inherently completely distracting. )

Really? I recall transatlantic phone calls that were essentially half-duplex; if I remember correctly, speaking more or less cut out the receiver – something to do with echo cancellation. It was much more work than full duplex.

No wonder people don’t use their mirrors, blinkers, or lights, nor look over their shoulder when changing lanes or backing anymore. They can’t take their hands off the wheel or eyes off the road.

There are people who are very animated when talking resulting in hands free cell phone use when driving. I once saw a guy behind the wheel of a car with no cell phone in his hands but his mouth was moving and both arms/hands flailing all over.

I had to retake a road test about a year or so ago. I passed pretty easily, with the instructor telling me the only thing I didn’t do completely correctly was not look over my shoulder before changing lanes. So I guess all those things you cited can be done and have an official blessing.

Mobile in hand or on lap and you’ll get a ticket in the mail.

I had an aunt who while driving used to turn her head around to talk to people in the back seat. I will never forget my cousin shouting “GOOD GAWD MAMA, YORE GONNA KILL US ALL!!” as she weaved her way down Peachtree Street in Buckhead with horns blaring around her.

I guess it would make sense with self driving cars.

It makes perfect sense. The owner of the vehicle is legally responsible whether they are driving or not. That applies to the law and your insurance. Don’t like it? Don’t own a vehicle, don’t lend your vehicle or don’t drive.

Many municipalities in Ontario are using ASE (Automatic Speed Enforcement) cameras as well as red light cameras. Citizens are undertaking vandalism towards the cameras.

Toronto, and surrounding GTA municipalities, have seen dozens of speed cameras chopped down in recent months. Toronto police say there have been no arrests in this week’s incidents and they haven’t said if the cases are connected or the work of different individuals.
