CommunityMember The “Big Game” is still technically just a really good 1080p HDR Broadcast that is upscaled to 4K. I watched it this past year in 4K and it looked awful compared to what I’d expect from 4K (I’m also spoiled by 4K Blu-Ray).
My understanding is many of the video trucks don’t have the hardware to get a 4K feed from every camera, and shoot it out to the station in 4K. Lots of infrastructure still left to build out, even if the ATSC 3.0 spec allows for proper 4K. But that’s also not to mention the DRM issue that ATSC 3.0 has, and how many ATSC 3.0 devices require Internet Access to pull licensing information, despite the fact that the broadcasts are meant to serve the public first and foremost with minimal barriers of entry.
It’ll be similar to the early days of HD, though. A lot of it started off at 720p/720i and eventually progressed to 1080i with decent hardware deinterlacers.
