On a little island within Constitution Gardens in Washington, D.C., stands a memorial to the 56 original signers of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Organized by their representative states, each engraved signature has printed below it the signer’s name, occupation, and hometown.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the revolutionary army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the revolutionary war.

Sorry but I don’t see it that way. While there hasn’t been much activity in the days leading up to last night as in prior years, last night was the worst it’s been in years. It was still going at 11:50pm when I briefly got up from bed to retrieve something downstairs, at which point I remarked to my GF how they never seem to give up and was wondering whether in 10 minutes anything would change because it would no longer be the 4th of July. All this shit is just a fire hazard and is clearly illegal in my, if not all, towns in the country, and is just carried on by a bunch of immature and reckless children who desire nothing but to be reckless at the expense of everyone in the neighborhood. Even though illegal, the police are certainly helpless stopping any of it, as that would involve canvassing virtually every block in this town of over 100 square miles. I might be inclined to excuse some of this if even one of these reckless idiots could even recite a single line from the Declaration of Independence, could name even one signatory thereto or could even advise in what city it was signed in, but I’d bet my bottom dollar that not even one of them could.

which only irritated (and slowed) one wasp - and all other personnel.
One small cloud of hair-spray put a stop to the idiocy.
( That co-worker got to stay behind while all else took a break during air-out. )

There’s an American Legion post a few hundred feet from us, next to a pretty nice sized field that’s not in crops this year. They had kept it mowed, managed to get a nice bundle of donations for an hour long fireworks show. Our volunteer FD and EMT were on standby, sheriff had two cruisers to control traffic as there were lots of kids of all ages on the streets.

We sat on the front veranda, watched it all. Yes, it wasn’t a big corporate or government sponsored production but was impressive for such a village as ours. Just think 4th of July in small town 1950s.

On another topic I went to mow this past week in prep for holiday, my 12 year old Husqvarna self propelled mower failed me, and I had to use my 40 year old Craftsman bagger-only push mower. The darned thing is heavy as heck but built like a tank and starts on the second pull, cuts and bags really well.

An autopsy revealed that the Husqvarna’s flywheel brake had disintegrated and cracked the ignition switch. Amazon is shipping a new assembly to my door by next Wednesday. Youtube has Instructions 😃

I keep parts manuals for all the equipment I buy. If something doesn’t come with one, I download it.

Do you have an example of this? There are no events or institutions that I am aware of that while might be predominately black exclude whites or anyone else. That these institutions may be predominately black today is just a carry-over from a time where blacks could and in many cases had to be legally be excluded from white institutions as well as what is modern de facto segregation resulting primarily from economic and social conditions that haven’t changed very much despite the modern legal impermissibility of the same. And don’t forget Justice Marshall’s quote quoted by Justice Douglas (don’t forget that Justice Marshall was known for his boundless sense of humor):

“You guys have been discriminating for years–now it’s our turn.”

Well, that does it. Climate warming is here. I went for walk around my neighborhood and all of a sudden the cicadas are chirping away.

It’s only the first week of July. Last year, it was mid-to-late July. Before that, the usual time was early August.

So if West was excluded it’s not a racial but a philosophical exclusion. They certainly don’t have to accept anyone who is not in alignment with their goals. Their by laws do not exclude any group although they apparently have an unwritten rule that it be solely black. Such “rules” are not uncommon for traditionally oppressed groups and is often of a transitional nature and it is certainly not of the invidious nature that was true under Jim Crow. For example, when I was in high school there was a Black Student Union for progressive blacks and a corresponding High School Student Union for whites with similar views. The whites accepted this arrangement for the time being. Similarly, the Black Panthers, for example, might have initially rejected whites but that changed to where they formed alliances with many progressive groups that were predominately white or had other makeups. Probably the best example of the evolution of this phenomenon was the subsequent Rainbow Coalition that had members of all marginalized groups, regardless of race or other classification.

An exclusion is racist when it is only because of the color of one’s skin that was not the case with West. It is a justifiable and non-racist exclusion when a potential member’s views is out of alignment with the goals of any group.
