The smaller companies (like Optimum) are already on the verge of going out of business due to increased competition, and they can’t afford these 4.0 upgrades.
They’re competing with much larger national companies like the wireless carriers and Starlink now, and expanding FTTH overbuilds.
Even Charter only has plans to upgrade 35% of their network to full DOCSIS 4.0, and not go back and upgrade the rest at any point in the near future.
Only a large company with deep pockets will have the scale and funds to quickly upgrade their network, while also losing customers to competitors.
Some small, local cable companies are still just on DOCSIS 3.0. There’s dozens of tiny local providers in pockets of the US.
