Xfinity now including unlimited data with customer modem

I just noticed with the new Xfinity plan updates on the website today, unlimited data is included regardless of whether or not you use their gateway. It appears “xfi complete” is no longer a thing. This is amazing news for my area!

I just had a ‘chat’ conversation with a CSR and they said the only way to get unlimited data was to use their equipment. Here is transcript:
Xfinity: 👋 Hi! I’m a live agent. Can I answer any questions?
You: Hi, I just learned that data caps are going away. I would like to re-structure my account so I am not paying the $30 unlimited data fee.

Don’t talk to them just check it out online.
It is not submitted until you confirm the order so you can back out if you want to.
During the order process gives you the option to use your own if it is compatible with the tier you select.

telcodad I just thought about this. With Cox and Charter merging, likely eliminating the Cox usage cap, that puts all major ISPs in the U.S. going unlimited data usage. We’re finally getting to point where the ISP is just a dumb pipe, no longer having to pay extra because you’re not using an ISP service. Xfinity going unlimited data means we’re finally free to use any streaming TV/media source without fear of going over an artificial cap.

Today is a major step forward.

Ultibeam With Cox and Charter merging, likely eliminating the Cox usage cap, that puts all major ISPs in the U.S. going unlimited data usage.

Cox had already been unofficially not enforcing the data cap in most places for a while now, especially where they had fiber competition.

I just checked a random address in Las Vegas, and their website said unlimited data was included.

I think AT&T DSL still has a data cap, for the few people who still have it. CenturyLink DSL might also, I can’t remember.

Man-of-Leisure It’s a bit hilarious to me that DSL with its pathetic speeds would have a usage cap when fiber at gigabit speeds doesn’t.

DSL isn’t a shared medium so there’s no last mile aggregate bandwidth constraint either. It’s just outdated thinking.

Hopefully the last vestiges of data caps will be swept away.

I don’t think that is true, there is still a fiber uplink ran to the node / DSLAM. If the uplink was saturated you would experience a slow down. Although this is usually unlikely to happen unless the node is very oversold and everyone was using it at the same time

Oddly enough, At&t DSL only has a data cap if your speed is less than 100Mbps. CL does not have a data cap on DSL.

Endeavors AT&T put the caps on ADSL2+/VDSL for profit and not congestion management, just like Comcast. If you bundled U-Verse TV/DIRECTV/DIRECTV Stream & Internet on the same account, you would get unlimited data without having to purchase an ad-on for $30.00.

Legacy DSL had a 150 GB cap put on it at the same time ADSL2+/VDSL had a 250 GB cap set and the 150 GB cap was never raised or had an unlimited data option, but that old DSL network used older ATM technology and had backhaul bandwidth limitations. ADSL2+/VDSL data cap was eventually raised to 1TB, then 1.5 TB. 100/20 VDSL2 has been unlimited on it’s own since maybe around 2017 or so.

You probably forgot (or intentionally want to forget), the “Cells in Frames” proposal that encapsulated ATM cells into Ethernet frames.

an incentive for you to change to the NEW standard tiers.
it simplifies their system, and avoids supporting 10’s of thousands of those on grandfathered plans no longer available for sale.. easier for tech support training to deal with 1 of 4 plans* deafferented by speed alone

*really 5-6 as they’ll have some sort of low income and the NOW plans

At this point, the only people still using DSL are people who can’t get anything better. Mostly in rural areas.

Most of Sierra County, CA has no cell coverage, and can only get AT&T DSL (up to 18Mb) or Starlink.

Most people just stick with DSL since Starlink is more than twice the price.

It’s kind of funny, the towns have basically set up their own cell coverage since every home and business has a Verizon LTE femtocell in their windows using the AT&T DSL as backhaul.

Man-of-Leisure My elderly grandparents still used 18/1.5 DSL from AT&T from 2011 until this month, AT&T deployed fiber from March-May this year. They have 300/300 speed now. Comcast has always been an option but they canceled it back in 2011 due to TV service issues and never wanted to go back to them (guess the difficulty of doing business with Comcast in general). Comcast upgraded their plant to mid-split in March 2024 (and overnight, not during the day!) and enabled mid-split and Gigabit X2 in June 2024.

18/1.5 is slow to me but was fine for their use case of general web surfing (email, online shopping, paying bills, reading news, etc) and streaming HD movies on 1 TV at a time. 1440p YouTube even worked lol.

I talked someone into paying $2500 for a plant extension instead of using Starlink. I used DOCSIS 4.0 FDX and the fiber like experience that it offers as a push. (Even though things will be 1 gig down and 35 up to start with until FDX rolls out).

Same, I had 70+ year old aunt/uncle who had been using AT&T DSL for probably 20+ years, it was up to 25/2Mb as of a few years ago.

They could get Comcast but “heard bad things” about them from neighbors, so they never switched.

Up until a few years ago when their bill had creeped up to $300/month for TV, Internet, and phone they asked me if I could help them look into alternatives.

I switched them to Comcast prepaid, Ooma VoIP, and YouTube TV and now they’re paying less than half what they were.

Next move will probably be switching them from Verizon postpaid to Visible for $20/month.
