It’s Friday! I had an interesting week. First, I had a reason to check my home’s radon mitigation system. Radon is the number 2 cause of lung cancer after smoking. I’ve never smoked and had no history of lung cancer in my family. Yet, they found a very small (“micro”) module in my lung. Further evaluation (CT scan) in progress. It’s likely nothing, but it can’t be ignored. Based on scheduling, I should have results at the end of the month. I bought a radon detector at Home Depot and checked the numbers. All good, all < 1 pCi/L.. Next, I cracked my iPhone 16 pro max’s screen protector. I dropped my iPhone and it did a face plant on my driveway. The Otterbox case handled it just fine. The screen protector did it’s job. Replacement is easy if you purchase a screen protector with an installation frame. Just place the frame over the phone, pull a tab, and the protector drops on the screen perfectly aligned. I got the Torras brand on Amazon. It got good reviews and is one of the easiest brands out there to install. I would agree.

Well, the weather will be rainy early today for the Belmont Stakes - “Saratoga Springs should expect rainfall throughout Friday and into Saturday morning. GeekGirl1 - Prayers and best wishes on your lung issue. My mom was a very heavy smoker since she was 16. They found and removed one node of one lung. But it had unknowingly metastasized in the brain. Inoperable 30 years ago. Watching my mom… die… was the absolute worst thing I ever encountered in my life. Can’t even imagine what she went through. Fortunately, it happened quickly.

Sovereignty won the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday after narrowly edging out Journalism at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Sovereignty and jockey Junior Alvarado traversed the field of eight on a fast Saratoga track after downpours throughout the morning and early afternoon dried up before post time.

Sovereignty, who was ranked second among the field of eight horses and had 2/1 odds to win the race, won in 2 minutes, 0.69 seconds, beating Preakness Stakes winner Journalism by three lengths.

Journalism ended up in second again and Baeza was third — the same 1-2-3 as the Kentucky Derby. …..

Recall watching half of the “Good Night Good Luck” before turning out the lights. George Clooney is so watchable IMHO. I can probably be contradicted but here goes, “ life was simpler then”.

A screwed up morning:
Last week the nose pad on my glasses fell off and I have been wearing my previous pair. I finally had the time for a repair and I was also able to locate my jeweler’s screwdriver set that I hadn’t used in many years. Taking the tiny screw out was no problem, but getting it back in took well over an hour. No matter how hard I tried it just wouldn’t go back in. I had cell phone atop my tall coffee cup to provide light, a pair of tweezers to hold the screw and a hand held magnifying glass. I had great difficulty focusing because my prescription had changed a slight amount from my previous year and the glasses frame is a metallic gold color which presented a strong glare. I had taken precautions against dropping the screw - I had plenty of experience losing screws when I did electronic repairs. I was working on a table that had a raised edge and was using a large white napkin to catch it if it dropped. However, after struggling for about 30 minutes the screw popped out of the tweezers and bounced somewhere on my rug never to be seen again. Fortunately I have several pair that I am going to donate to the Lions Club and was able to find another screw. I tried again for some time but was still unable to get it to go into the hole. That is when I noticed that the nose pad “hole” had been squashed a little. After straightening this out the screw went in easily. Unfortunately however, I had installed it upside down and had to repeat the process. I will probably wind up replacing the nose pad itself in the near future but now I have lots of experience. 🙂

In my experience, opticians will do trivial repairs (replace nosepads, lost screws) for free - even if they aren’t the original vendor. I have offered to pay, only to be told “don’t worry about it”.

I do use businesses where the optician is the owner, so that might make a difference,.

Of course, you have to get to the opticians, which can be hard without a functional pair of glasses…

Actually I have an (unrelated) appointment at the VA tomorrow and I was originally going to take them to the optician there. But I’m stubborn and like to do things for myself whenever possible. I may stop in to see if she has any nose pads - there is a reason this one fell off.

First time in a while I can get online. I been really sick the last couple of weeks. Just finally starting to get over these two illnesses.

Now on top of that I have to contact a hematologist/oncologist to make sure that I haven’t gotten Luekemia.

So now I gotta get an appointment with one to hopefully rule out Luekemia. My white blood count has been high for the last year of lab tests. So I’m hoping that I don’t.

Received the weather radio bundle that a posted about in last weeks, weekend open thread, need to test them out in the areas where we camp see how far they transmit and receive yet but I am happy I bought this kit. https://broadbandbulletin.com/d/3432-weekend-open-thread-friday-may-30-2025/28 and just like a smoke detector I think most everyone should have a weather radio. The bundle I bought EPREPKIT from Midland is more than some may need but as I said in the previous post that the portable radios are mainly going to be used when camping. Even if your area doesn’t usually have tornados it still will alarm you with severe thunderstorm warning that you can set as you want. And with the changing weather these days a weather radio just may save your life.

Guy54435 I’ve lived in hurricane, thunderstorm and tornado central almost all of my life here in FL. All I’ve found a weather radio to do is throw you into a panic that a severe storm/tornado/etc is imminent where you aren’t.

I used to have a weather radio, but since I’ve had a smartphone, that provides better, on-demand, weather information, including radar, and alerts me for severe weather warnings for my area now.
