New Policy on Sharing of News Articles

We have a new policy regarding the sharing news articles. This replaces the previous “Links Only” policy.

When sharing news articles, a link must be included to the article with no more than 2 sentences of quoted content, whenever possible. Often the lead of a news article is included in its first few sentences.

I appreciate everyone’s understanding, patience and participation in our community.

Is this still a rule?

Almost every day I see posts with more than two sentences from an article source.

Sometimes the material isn’t even quoted, and just copied and pasted. Maybe that is a loophole to get around the limitation of “quoted” material.

I think this thread should have a bit of instruction on what they want proper formatting to be. And how to edit for those newer links with the full headline and the pop-up preview.

It doesn’t seem complicated to me. Cite links summarized with a couple of sentences, and elaborate as you wish in your own words.

Since we’re not writing academic papers, APA, Chicago, MLA citation styles aren’t necessary.

I guess it does work, but takes a bit more effort. If anyone is unclear on how it works: Click the paper-clip/link icon in the edit window. Put the title between the square brackets, and replace the dummy https in the parenthesis with the real link.

When I try to just paste a link, it only shows up as a link.

HMM. Something changed. It never did that before.

You can title the link anything you want using the brackets. Just pasting the link yields the title given in the meta data of the webpage.

Just a question on how it does those fancier links with the auto-generated title and drop-down when you hover over with the mouse. One one post I created in TV/Movies, it’s just a plain link, even when I tried the full link formatting. (This link is to the BBF article with the bad link.)

A Flarum plugin handles it. Looking at the source code for your link there is not any body text, just script. I don’t know if that is a factor, offhand I’d say it is. The title for the link appears to be generated from the page’s meta data. If you can find which plugin used for this you can dig through the source code to determine precisely how it is done.

I want to say I still do not like the separate news areas. I much prefer everything all in one place and not having to go to All Discussions and News as well. All should be all.

Mods shouldn’t have to monitor every new post made under each and every tag looking for news stories and ones that include excessively long quotes. The wonderful volunteers who are keeping things under control should be lauded.

Donoreo Absolutely agreed, but I suspect the likelihood of change (of any kind) is low.

IMO same should hold true for posting walls of AI text output. But that’s another can of worms.
