ugly95 I think there’s something to be said about how much content there is now. There’s no reason to believe that there are fewer talented people now than there was. And, if anything, they should be more talented, having more past content to learn from.
Sure there is. There just a lot of people with no talent that’s all. Nothing new about that. Only difference between now and then is now those people are actually getting hired by people who think that actually is “talent” and there are a lot more of them doing the hiring. The bar is just lower all the way around from the talent pool to those who actually do the hiring.
But now you’ve got hundreds of shows. Talent will be spread thin. I could easily imagine that you have TV shows that are full of writers that are pretty much rookies.
That’s why the old saying of “There’s hundreds of channels and nothing’s on” came about.
I remember reading something about Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty) was how much time he spent with new writers, teaching them things like story structure and how important that was to teach.
As if the likes of Rick and Morty is an example of great talent. Sure it’s got its fans and will carve out a space for itself in Hollywood but it’s not exactly Bugs Bunny.
Just last night I caught an episode of an old PBS documentary called Pioneers of Television. It went showed how the old sitcoms start from 1950s through the 70s like The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore Show, etc started and ended. It was very informative. I know those are very old but those actors back then really had to show their stuff with a much higher bar back then.
