I watched the new season of The Witcher.
Oh man, it was bad. I feel for Liam Hemsworth. He comes in and takes over the role, and it’s terrible. Not really his fault for anything. It’s the writing. It’s not like Geralt was a difficult character to take over. The only thing I really noticed was that his grunt seemed a bit less angry. But nothing an actor does is going to save or ruin a series that decides to throw a 10 minute musical in the middle of an episode.
They split it into 3 separate storylines again: Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. Yennefer’s story was forgettable. Geralt’s story was dull. And Ciri’s story was embarrassing. Like Xena/Hercules level TV.
Yennefer spends the whole season recruiting mages. Characters that I never cared about and barely remember and might have been mad at each other for some reason that I forget. For some reason other witchers show up. It leads up to a final battle, which was okay I guess. But mages fighting is kind of boring. They fling their hands around and a bunch of random things happen on screen. And in the end the battle doesn’t resolve anything.
Geralt’s story is about he and his group of superfriends. I guess it was mainly about the character softening to enjoy the company of others. The problem is nothing really happens. They’re traveling but we have no real basis for where they are and where they are heading. They occasionally run into a monster or something but there isn’t much going on. Most of the characters are just hanging around in the background. Eventually, the characters tell their backstory and you learn to accept them. Then immediately after, a bunch of them just decide to quit the group of superfriends and return home. So that was all pointless. Then they get into a big battle at the end, which was okay for action, but didn’t really resolve anything. They’re still partway through their journey.
Ciri’s story lands here, randomly apparently, in a random town and she joins up with a group of thieves called the Rats. These characters were awful. You know they’re badass because they stand around a table spinning knives in their hands. Everything they do is dumb and annoying. It doesn’t seem like any character development happens for Ciri in all of this. It seems like a complete diversion while we wait for something to happen next season.
