Dks01 Doctors are telling employers to stuff it with sick notes. If you can’t write a basic note of two or three sentences, you might need a remedial course in Grade 6 language.
At least in Ontario, it’s actually illegal to ask for a sick note unless the employee is applying for short-term or long-term disability benefits.
But before that became the case, my doctor had a serious hate-on for employers asking for sick notes. Any time my employer sent me to get one because I called in sick for 1 or 2 days, the doc would say “well, if it’s bad enough you need to come to see me, you need… wait, how many days before you need to get disability benefits? you need that many days.” The number of times I would have been back at work on the third day but ended up getting 2 weeks off because of a stupid sick day policy is non-zero.
And yes, my doctor can write. Pretty well, actually. At least when he was doing his degree in the 80’s, McGill strongly suggested that med students should take a broader base which includes humanities, and mine took advantage of that.
