I thought this was an interesting story. A Yale professor has decided to move to the University of Toronto due to the current administration’s policies and the pressure applied to educational institutions in that country. Yale professor moving to U of T due to ‘far-right’ Trump administration’s pressure on universities A few other articles have suggested that this may be the beginning of the usual “brain drain” in reverse, with researchers and professionals moving to Canada and European countries. The key question is whether they will stay if/when some level of sanity finally returns to their former country of choice.

Dks01 For gods sake how OLD are you? Have the cobwebs started forming yet? 😉 My eldest brother is 71 and even he had a calculator in high school in the early 1970s (HP-35). I was in HS in the mid 80s and we all had calculators by then - primarily most of us had HP28 or Casio fx7000 graphing calculators – I still have my casio in my desk drawer almost 40 years later.

Hydraglass calculators were not permitted in my high school until well after I graduated. I still have my slide rule. Still works. No batteries to worry about, either.

Dks01 By the time I was in high school in the mid 80s most “simple calculators” were solar powered - at least the kind we were permitted in school for the most part. I didn’t find I got heavy usage of them until around the time we were doing trigonometry in grade 10 – I can’t image trying to do all the trig equations using trig tables by hand. I’d be willing to wager no one in this chat knows what the COS(pi/5) * SIN (pi/3) is nor would they be able to without a calculator. I also don’t think your slide rule would help you there.

We did it manually first, then let us do the calculator.

You’d be wrong. The trig identities to solve that are high school stuff, and my al/geo teacher wouldn’t let us use calculators at all. In Mr. F’s words, “I want the exact answer. A calculator won’t give you that.”

(and at the time it was true - my calculator had constants for pi, e, and about 40 other transcendental constants that get used in physics, but it would always try to do a decimal approximation rather than spit out a rational answer)

Hydraglass I have conveniently and, I thought, permanently forgotten any and all trig I was required to learn in high school. However, your mention of battery less, printed trig tables caused me to have a severe PTSD reaction. I have a vague recollection of using them. I escaped Grade 13 without a math credit, as only Grade 12 Academic level math was required for undergrad admission outside of sciences.
