Thought I'd make a thread like I did for my "My Cable Problems" But hopefully this will be an all good thread. Not using the provided router, its speed and range is pretty good, but features even basic settings it does not have. Did have it installed at my parents house in my old spare room since it was easier and 600ft less of digging. And still utilizing the fiber I have our houses connected together with at 10gig. Using a UDM Pro for the Router which is at my house along with a U7 Pro (love/hate) At my parents house on a VLAN for there network using a NanoHD and U6 LR AP's over there. Still trying to decide if I want to enable IPv6 or not. Just a bit freaked out that EACH device gets there own public IPv6, but I guess security wise its still safe and firewalled.

As is always true, your mileage will vary. Charter’s routing is poor for some, good for others, and meh for yet more.

edin Yeah about a month ago I gained 10+ ms latency than I’ve ever had before out of nowhere. One day it was up 20+ with no one else using it (at the residence anyway.) It was already high at the mid 40s. Once you get above 65 ms some stuff is impossible to deal with in certain specific games.

No idea why it is so bad because it wasn’t for nearly a year. Now I long for the low 40s again. Occasionally I’d be in high 30s for some titles which was great.

CBusdude Charter LOVES to keep things on their network as much as possible

Actually, most importantly, Charter LOVES to save money. Peering and paid transit all cost various kinds of money and adds some levels of complexity. Connecting to the major providers in the usual colos often makes the most sense for Charter to avoid spend. While some people will point to various claims of “free peering”, that does not include the costs of equipment or colo space or cross connects in the facility, and some of those peering requirements come with minimum commits that you cannot meet at some locations.

If you are a serious competitive gamer, and the game you play offers advantages with lower RTT, your best approach is to move next door to one of the the hosting sites of your favorite game servers with a careful choice of available enterprise ISP services at that address (just like the major financial players in the high frequency trading market moved their servers next to the stock exchange to gain a few microseconds). Or, for those not playing at the highest competitive levels, choose a game where RTT does not matter.

I’m lucky my small mom and pop ISP peers with many, including the datacenter where my works servers are, so I get 12ms ping on DOCSIS INSIDE the VPN tunnel. That’s not much different than on prem wireless (wireless latency through access switches, plus 1-2ms over the private 10gig fiber to the colo).

You can look at the connectivity for AS22773. Short term I don’t expect much to change. When Charter merged with TWC it took years before any wide changes occurred (first the merger has to actually be approved, then the quick synergy savings have to result in the right number of parachutes (the company will not need two CFOs, CPOs, CIOs, CTOs) and redundancies (that is layoffs and terminations to the rest of us for the teams that reported to the now ex-CFO… etc.), and only then will the remaining engineering teams look at the contracts to see where networks can be combined/simplified). As many of the networking contracts are longer term there may be no advantage to moving quickly.

Good points there. They do share some interconnection facilities but I’m sure in a few years operational efficiencies will come in the form of some adjustments.

Why send it to every customer? They have emailed this twice to my accounts email.

I’m not the only one and judging by Reddit a bunch of people have been calling requesting it and being told it’s not available.

Yeah pretty sure it’s coax only, but misleading that they have sent the email at least twice to tons of customers when it’s not actually available.

I know multi gig has been around for a bit in certain markets, but after being a customer for around 6 months this is the first time getting emails for Internet “upgrades”. Usually they spam TV or phone “deals”

edin Honestly I agree they should have it only marketed in areas where it is actually available. It has taken them about 3 years just to light up 8 markets plus the test market of Burns OR.

It took 2 years for North Texas to launch symmetrical and then about two weeks later 2gig was added to the broadband label and I found it metro wide checking addresses on the order site.

I think 2gig may be available in FTTH areas of North Texas (excluding RFoG deployments) and potentially the east Texas RDOF markets but I need to confirm the latter.

Edit: seeing 2gig available in FTTH areas adjacent to the coax plant in North Texas.

First offical Spectrum outage! Within the time of it going out and me opening the app, its already known theres an outage! So don’t have to waste my time calling! Vyve wouldn’t even admit to an outage 2 days of things being out lol.

Maybe 2 gig upgrade? Prob not, not sure they’d even have to bring down services for that lol

edin The coax areas are having the CMTS ports reconfigured for the 2gig so it is taking down the nodes being moved to different ports or a new CMTS to activate more OFDM block capacity. They did some work in my area last week and took the modems down on my node shortly after 12am for about an hour so I am guessing someone on the line cards my node are connected to ordered the 2gig tier.

Same over here on the eastern side of the county. Checked several friends that are on different OLTs and they’re out too. Will be interesting to see what’s going on, but first major outage I’ve had (I’m not counting Helene).

cypherstream E6000 were the existing install base. A tech reported on the spectrum subreddit they are using a version 2 CMTS if the node is oversaturating the ports and has too many customers to use an existing port. Can they use vCMTS with legacy nodes? so maybe Harmonic Cable OS vCMTS as needed?

Motorola870 they’d have to put an RPHY module in the node to work vCMTS. A few months back on here people were telling me they did not have vCMTS RPHY deployed yet. Even high split was legacy.

My provider uses a bunch of e6000’s too, but they are digging up my development putting conduits and new pedistals in for their FTTH upgrade. For that they are using Nokia 25gpon switching platform.

Motorola870 To use a vCMTS with legacy nodes, they install an rPHY shelf like the Harmonic Reef or CommScope e6000r connected to the legacy transmitters and receivers in the hub.
