I think it comes down to there being no guarantee. It’s something you can afford to do when you’re at the tail end of your career. But, to do it as a young player in your prime earning years, you’re potentially giving up a lot. And only one team can win.
For example, if a young player takes less than they’re worth, tries to win it and loses. Then they get a career-ending injury, that would really affect their career earnings.
Not to mention that the NHLPA really doesn’t like players signing for less than they are worth.
