Yea, not bad, probably the first time in years nu-Trek has actually made an effort towards science fiction… although I could do with less annoying characters and it was a bit predictable.

If referring to the Gorn episodes. there is some thematic overlap with:

“Blood and Fire” is an episode written by David Gerrold initially for Star Trek: The Next Generation, but instead developed into a novel and later filmed for the fan series Star Trek: New Voyages.

In the original script, the crew of the Enterprise-D came upon a derelict spaceship whose crew had all been killed off by Regulan bloodworms. Since these creatures are highly dangerous and can kill within hours, any ship or space station found to be infested with bloodworms must be sterilized and destroyed, per Starfleet orders.

Yea, the writing’s been trash this season and if you look at Rotten Tomatoes, viewers agree with me. They’ve given Season Three 55%, Season Two 77%, and Season One 81%.

I miss the days of The Next Generation where you would have a season of single episode stories with fresh ideas, now they seem to rehash other science fiction stories but badly with the occasional fan service to stoke the nostalgia and overarching stories that are ridiculous or uninteresting.

As a Star Trek fan, I rate this season 1.5 / 5.

If I tried to erase Star Trek from memory, I might give it a 2 / 5 since the effects are pretty good.

I’ve only watched 2 of the episodes, I think.

I used to REALLY want to watch Star Trek episodes (or ANY good SF) but this show has killed my desire.

Had the same feeling about Star Wars “Andor”.

My wife (who is even a much bigger science fiction fan than I am) shares this feeling.

Andor was dark, dark, dark, more dark.

Even “Babylon 5” had some humor and lightness at times—but not these shows.

Andyross well I’m definitely intrigued by all of that.

I feel like what I really didn’t like about the last season is they seemed to have moved away from sci-fi and more into the world of action, using bad sci-fi as a backdrop rather than the focus. Hopefully they clean that up for this season. I’d seen a lot of media review sites referring to last season’s bad writing so hopefully those involved got the message.

Some of the best classic Trek employed the Captains and key personnel using ingenious solutions, tactics, and strategy to solve probelms and save the day while respecting canon (for the most part) without making stuff up out of whole cloth as a plot device (spore drive [STD], etc, ad nauseam).

A show like this should reflect the true human condition and not some artificial plastic future. The original series tackled human faults and social issues head on in the 1960s. Then in the 1980s it was rebooted and would be reimagined in three series that cleansed human faults and presented a human-centric fake utopia. Of course that reflected what was going on in society at the time when the human condition was papered over in the real world, which influenced production values at the time. What we see on the screen is a reflection of the real world and IMO it’s time for a long needed readjustment to reflect that. Especially now.

I’m not sure if it’s because of Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, or any of the other shows and movies that have caused this but gone are the days where I’m excited for a new season of a show, a new series, or a movie that I’d think I’d like because I’m always seriously underwhelmed or at worse bothered by it.

I rewatched a few episodes of Strange New Worlds over the past few months but none of them gave me the enjoyment I get from watching an episode of TNG or VOY after the umpteenth million times. Heck, it’s almost to the point where I’d rather watch the Groundhog Day of Stargate SG-1 for God knows how many times than a new episode of Strange New Worlds.

In addition, several new photos from the season’s first and second episodes were unveiled, including an undercover landing party where equine aficionado Captain Pike (Anson Mount) leads Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and La’an on a cowboy adventure across an alien desert.
