If the US wins the game with him playing, there will be a cloud on it because of that.
As a player, I’m inclined to judge the red card after review as being right. But I won’t make that argument here because it is a judgement call that should be left to the game officials… them’s the rules.
As a student of The Game, I think the red card should be honored. And I ask, “Why did FIFA lift the game suspension, but then impose a 1-year probation… WTF colored card is that?”
As a US citizen, I think the “subsequent high-level interference” is wrong and embarrassing and bad for the US team going forward in this tournament (and beyond, if they win it) and bad for The Game.
As a fan of soccer who generally roots for the side(s) that plays the beautiful game beautifully, I think Belgium will play their hearts out tonight (don’t miss it!) and I will not be disappointed if they win… I will be relieved, but the damage done to The Game will linger until forgotten.
That England v Mexico game was awesome and honorable! Congratulations to both sides, the fans in the stands, and the Mexican hosts and their venue. It was all great!
