From XG1V4 to All Xi6 Wi-Fi TV boxes

When we went All Xi6 WIfi TV boxes

The Tech that installed the box did nothing downstairs with the One Splitter we have, just pushed the former Coax Cable we used for the Former XG1V4 4K TV box down the hole. We do not have Wall Jacks in this Townhome, just 2 Wires that came up next to the baseboard from the Basement

White Wire goes to Gateway Modem
The Black One out the other side of the Splitter was the former XG1V4 4K TV Box
The Single wire on the one side of the splitter is the Main incoming Coax Line with the Moca Filter right there it appears

computerman2 Surprised the tech didn’t remove the splitter and MoCA filter with there only being 1 piece of DOCSIS equipment on the account now (Your XB8 modem). A barrel connector is used to connect the incoming cable line to the line that is running to the modem.

Maybe the signal was too hot. XM2 signal meter would have confirmed or denied. Customer can also do the same by checking the signal levels on the modem.

It was a not an inhouse Xfinity Tech, but Contractor that arrived that day

Just came in, looked at XG1V4 box, said yup this box is dead–as then had no picture at all from it, upon reboot, just would sit forever on the Boot up Welcome screen. Went out to his van, grabbed XI6 Wifi box, set that up, and pushed black wire down the hole, and grabbed old box–and was like your all set, Have a Great rest of evening

I’ll look at the signals shortly here

Oh mid-split won’t be an issue at all. FDX probably won’t be either as long as the splitter is rated to 1 GHz.

It is my understanding you won’t be able to get full FDX upload speeds with that MoCA filter on the line by itself. But of course you’ll need to worry about obtaining an XB10 gateway first anyways(At that point they’ll more then likely send out another install tech).

That was precisely the case when I went through something similar last year to have a dead XG1v4 replaced. The tech did not remove the splitter because the signal would have otherwise been too hot; it was providing the necessary attenuation.

crucialcolin It’s only about downstream capacity. The initial deployment:

All of the FDX upstream comes from the 111-381 MHz block. Soon, the same block will be used for downstream - making the block above 1 GHz somewhat optional.

When 3/3 Gbps gets deployed, another 96 MHz FDX block will be allocated.

Just curious, how is the XG1v4 dying. I’ve had one for almost 7 years in its place and no issues. Unfortunately a tech took it away when they tried to fix XRE-03121, when I later determined it was another box causing it.

Well started being very slow, freezing, very slow to reboot, til finally it just sat at the Welcome screen. Tech came in and goes yup its dead, and disconnected it, took it out to his Van, brought in XI6 Wireless box

Of course ours was used nearly 24/7 for years for DVR Recordings, Family member likes to record alot, whereas i myself i try to catch up on my shows as fast as i can and then delete them right away

i tried not to keep anything of mine on the DVR longer than 5 days, but sometimes i got a little behind, but eventually i did watch it all and deleted everything

as for the XI6 Wireless boxes so far both working fine, if Family member doesn’t fill up all dvr space still (Imagine its Cloud DVR space now, as don’t think the XI6 Wireless boxes have a Local Hard drive inside)

This is usually a sign of a failing hard drive.

Devious It has always been possible to swap out these drives for larger sizes?

Someone tried it years later and the box refused to boot pass the “Welcome” screen unless the original 500GB hard drive that shipped with the unit was installed. They even left it overnight and no luck. Looked to have 3 partitions too (checked via a Windows PC). Recordings are stored in an encrypted/special format though. Can’t just play them back on a PC for obvious reasons.

Should be irrelevant on most systems anyways. Xfinity has migrated to an all Cloud DVR even on XG1V3 and v4s disabling internal storage.

On those DVR STBs what’s a little unknown is rather or not the X1 platform OS itself is stored internally on the hard drive or on a separate chip. The box failing to get past the welcome screen does seems to indicate it’s on the hard drive in its own partition however.

Does that still mean they lose surround sound on recordings even where the original had it? That was always a down side of using the apps (and a plus for YouTube TV). Or have they finally fixed the cloud recordings?

I’m not sure as I haven’t noticed an issue with surround myself lately.

All I know is they’ve pretty much gone to all cloud recording and are beginning to phase out the DVR STBs altogether. Going forward both stores and install techs are only going to carry the small XiD, Xi5, or Xi6 boxes since everything will be IPTV based.

One of the greatest joys in the world during Tivo days…swap out the drive.

I remember on the older Motorola Comcast/Xfinity DVRs you used to be able to hookup a pc/mac via FireWire to capture video off it.

That was sort of a theoretical thing. I got it to work once but it was a realtime capture not file access, with no way to automate it. Not something you would want to do in general.

Yeah I always did it real time. Captured a bunch of Adult Swim content back in the day that way lol

I vaguely remember it being cheaper and/or easier then dealing with the headache involving QAM based PCI expansion capture and cable cards during the digital cable transition.
