Because at this point I trust a BYD to be safer on the road than a Cybertruck. They’ve been on the roads in Europe for a couple of years, and their flagship car has a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. And because the European market is doing fine despite having no protectionist tariffs in place at all - frankly the domestic North American market needs the competition to drive it to innovate. The current regime only protects big American brands, and we’re all suffering for it in the form of lack of innovation and higher prices.
And because the rumour mill has it that in a couple of years it’ll be moot. BYD has floated the idea of opening a factory in Ontario to build them here - this after they’ve already broken ground on factories in South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe. So maybe we shouldn’t be treating them as an enemy in order to protect the country that’s treating us as one.
