We paid for Comcast Business fiber, ENS so it was like a virtual switch. A fiber LC into a Ciena dual power supply Metro Ethernet switch, then an RJ-45 cable out of that. It was Any to Any, but we put a transport network on it and a vlan and ran OSPF over it.
The issue with the private Comcast Ethernet Network Services was the market latency. Between counties, even though its fiber, it was 21ms floor latency. From site to site within the same county it was what you’d expect for fiber, 1 to 3ms latency. We spent almost $116,000 in 2024 for Comcast fiber. In 2025 we reduced that to about $33,000. Where did the rest go? Another provider who has given us faster speeds and lower latency (1 to 3ms anywhere). From 2024 to 2025 we saved just over $83k from cutting Comcast but spent almost $36k more with the other carrier. Still that’s a savings of almost $48k a year by switching providers.
- 1gig and 10gig in some sites, 1-3ms latency $48k less a year vs
- 50meg and 200meg in some sites, 21+ms latency with Comcast.
You want fiber you can get it, but you gotta pay to play.
