Canadian Gas Prices

I have said a number of times that I don’t (usually) drive, but I still tend to pay attention to gas prices if I happen to pass a gas station when I’m out. I have noticed that prices have been high lately (by my standards), but since the latest adventure in Iran started, prices seem to have jumped roughly 10¢/L. Some time last week, during a walk to the grocery store, I noticed that prices were roughly: Regular 87-octane gasoline 147.9; “efficient” diesel 197.9. While out yesterday, I passed a different station, but still Esso, and noticed that regular-87 was almost exactly 10¢/L more; 157.9, if I’m not mistaken. That station doesn’t offer diesel, but I would guess it’s now over $2/L. Are others seeing the same trend elsewhere, or is this just the Quebec tax, and more localised profiteering, with further actual Iran-induced increases to come?

Last time I walked by a gas station a couple of days ago, it was at 179.9 and had been like that all over town for a couple of weeks, but on Gasbuddy this morning, I’m seeing 187.5 and 187.9 reported in the past few hours. Good thing I filled up when I came back from Montreal last Sunday (I saw anywhere from 180.9 to 196.5 in Montreal).

We had our very typical usual Tuesday price bump here this week, but it was larger than previous weeks. On the weekend and Monday at my local station it was $1.599 - On Tuesday morning when I stopped to get gas it was down to $1.579 - I was pretty happy and filled up and topped off the tank. I didn’t notice the price on the way home last night as there was some goofball blocking the intersection with his broken down jacked up pickup truck and I was paying attention to the traffic and navigating around the mess. This morning at 5a when I went by it was $1.789 - so it went up 21 cents yesterday. Thats the biggest single day jump I’ve seen since the first day of the kerfuffle when it jumped from $1.199 to $1.429.

Did we not have an increase in embedded gas taxes recently applied to our gas prices? I believe the industrial carbon tax is one of those taxes that just went up 16%…?

Yup: “On April 1, 2026, Canada increased its federal industrial carbon tax (Output-Based Pricing System) from $95 to $110 per tonne, marking a nearly 16% hike. ”

Dropped a bit here today - $1.699 at all 4 stations I passed on my way home. Was $1.729 yesterday after the jump up to $1.789 on Tuesday.

Donoreo Then +8 cents Saturday. And the majors have not switched to summer blend yet, that’s coming in 2-3 weeks, which will add 5-10 cents a litre on its own.

Topped off my half full tank today at Esso for 173.9 today. I only need to fill up once every 9 days or so since my driving is 90% highway where my ’16 Malibu daily driver gets 40 mpg.

Around 174 now. I gassed up earlier in the day at 162 but pretty much everywhere around here is 168 - 174, more in the lower 170s.

I have a feeling the weekend is going to be in the 170s.

175.9 to 179.9 here over the weekend. Reserve is 162.9.

We were at $1.659 for Sunday and Monday - luckily I filled up yesterday morning so I’m good for the week - as it was $1.799 this morning with the usual Tuesday morning price increase shenanigans across the city. Oh, of course there’s no collusion or price fixing… prices magically at every station within 3km of my house all mysteriously go up exactly 14c/L within 6 hours of each other, every Tuesday morning, for the last decade.

199.9 today at most stations, with some still at 196.9 (yesterday’s price).

It was $2.25/l when I bought my Tucson in mid-June 2022. I guess it won’t be long before we’re back up there. And beyond. Thanks Agolf.

Last 2 mornings the Petro I drive past on the way to work was 184.9. Coming home at 5pm it was 179.9.

Drove to Niagara Falls for a sleep study, gas on the way here was 170.9. Guess I’ll fill up in the morning when they kick me out.

Dks01 Continued up here all day - the same station that was $1.799 this morning was $1.849 this PM when I came home… $2.19/L for 91 octane and $2.49/L for diesel.

Crude prices have apparently dropped by 15% given a change in situations, unsure how long that’d filter down to prices at the pump, or if they’ll just steady out a bit for the next few weeks in case there are further changes (just pointing out info I’ve seen and not going political on this for obvious reasons)
