I'm almost certain that 64-bit capable PCs predated commonly used 64 bit MS OSs by quite some time.

64 bit XP was the first 64 bit MS OS for consumers, but that didn't see much use for a number of reasons, The share of 64 bit OS installs grew a lot under Vista, but I think it was with Win 7 that their share eclipsed of the 32-bit (x86) variant.

The first desktop version of Windows to officially support 64-bit processors out of the box was Windows Vista in 2006. However, if you were really keen, it was possible to obtain Windows XP Professional X64 Edition – in fact, based on the Windows Server 2003 codebase rather than XP per se – sometime earlier.

The problem with 64-bit XP was that it was a first class PITA to find drivers. For some reason vendors couldn't or were too lazy to develop them at the time or just didn't want to accept that 64-bit was on the table. I knew very few people that actually ran it. MS also never released SP3 for the 64-bit version like they did for the 32-bit version.

Yes like I did with previous versions. Eventually newer software and hardware won't work with older versions so that is when I upgrade/change.

What exactly do you mean about "out of the box"?

64 bit XP also came in a box, so it also supported x64 out of the box. 😉

I knew about the lack of drivers, but can't recall the lack of SP3.

just_4_fun a few years back I tried to try the speedtest.net CLI test on her system not realizing it was only meant for x64 and needless to say that failed.

Of course a x64 app failed to run in a 32 bit operating system.

Post the system specifics (Manufacturer, Specific Model, CPU ID and installed type eg: ddr3 and amount of RAM) of her system.

*The last 32-bit CPU was released in 2003 by Intel, known as the Pentium 4-M.

It seems likely that the system is x64, with a 32 Bit OS installed.

Other OS options for 32bit hardware are less common as well, but not entirely gone.

Microsoft has a Windows 10 problem. The problem is that despite the launch of the newer, shinier Windows 11, a large section of PC users are stubbornly refusing to upgrade, and instead sticking with the almost 10-year old operating system.

While that might not seem like a huge problem for Microsoft – after all, people are still using a version of its Windows OS, even if it’s not the latest – the company has also announced that Windows 10 is fast approaching its ‘End of Life’ date of October 14,2025.

After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide updates, including security patches for Windows 10 – leading to anyone still using the OS being potentially at risk as new security threats emerge. So, Microsoft’s problem is that it has a hard deadline (which it imposed itself, to be fair) to get people to move from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Unfortunately, it’s currently doing a terrible job of it.

So, with the clock ticking, what can Microsoft do to convince people to move to Windows 11? While I fear the company will keep using its ‘stick’ approach until everyone is so fed up they install Windows 11 just to shut Microsoft up, I have a few better suggestions.

Forget AI, give people real reasons to upgrade to Windows 11

Fix the taskbar

Stop releasing bad updates

Cut the ads…

…or make Windows 11 free forever

5 things Microsoft needs to do to make people ditch Windows 10 and love Windows 11

The “stop releasing bad updates” issue is significant, literally once a week they are releasing an update that breaks Windows for a large swathe of people.

I think a lot of people in IT were skipping it because they were hoping Microsoft would give Windows 11 the Windows 8 treatment, where everyone pretended it never existed. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

No, the two methods are fully compatible.

0patch takes some getting used to, it is totally quiet (passive).

When first installed it will report how many patches have been applied, then it will slow down being that the initial rush will be over.

I have the green 0patch icon sitting in my taskbar, when you mouse over it it says “Everything is OK” which is a nice simple reassurance.

The ordering process is a little confusing (I did go with the paid versions) because it’s European.

As said, it seems to be a good solution for me. Neither of my Windows 10 machines have hardware that will allow Windows 11.

I think 0patch may be the way for us.. Wife is running the 32bit OS so no path for her with the Rufus Win11 hack

It’s just the regular Windows system tray—where your clock shows on a Windows machine—

And you can enable the little green 0patch icon to appear there, and mousing over the logo it will say “Everything is OK”.

Doing right-click or left-click on the icon opens up various functions such as Console, Settings, etc.

BTW the default setting is that it checks for patch updates (they call it syncing) every 60 minutes.

They do have a free trial if you just want to look at things.

The free trial provides some patches, not the full set.

No, I mean, literally “breaks Windows”. When you oversee large swathes of users you see interesting events following Patch Tuesday which is why a lot of corporations stagger updates and let certain users test the latest updates.

Over the past decade I’ve watched Microsoft wipe drives, wipe files in important folders, cause bluescreens and unbootable systems where you have to wipe because they broke system restore, etc., etc., and the frequency of this seems to be increasing. Literally once a week large swathes of people are impacted.
