From the perspective of a simple, nimble, purpose-focused design that can evolve, the idea of the Gripen appeals to me. This compared a design that tries to throw everything, including the kitchen sink and then some, at all problems, trying to solve all of them at once, and ends up excelling at nothing. From the standpoint of a taxpayer, the initial and ongoing/maintenance costs speak for themselves.
Then there is the matter of the Canadian requirements giving the appearance of having been “cooked” to favour the F-35. So, what do we get out of that deal again? When can we expect the presidential delegation and its charm offensive, with Lockheed Martin people in tow? Where are they proposing to build the Canadian assembly facility?
