As someone who used to read a lot of Fantastic Four back when it was the more cerebral of the Marvel comics, I’m not at all a fan of his casting and it annoys me they’d cast someone of fame rather than someone who fits the character.

I predict a lot of comic fans won’t go see this movie because of the casting.

I just saw that the Silver Surfer character has been recast as a female. That seems to be in conflict with the original story.

Puzzle me this: If Wonder Woman were a Marvel property (It’s currently DC), would Marvel recast Wonder Woman as a man in a franchise recycle? Why or why not?

If you read the comics, you would know this isn’t a gender-swap, and she is actually a real character in the comics. The Silver Surfer was one of the first ‘villains’ that the Fantastic Four encountered and he was the herald of Galactus, which I believe is the story they’ve adapted for this movie. This character with a neverending fount of power was so popular they continuously brought him back soon after his debut story for multiple issues over the next many years.

Shalla-Bal was Norrin Radd’s love, she was a shoe-string non-existent character. She’s not even the woman behind the man, she’s the woman who he was taken away from.

urbanriot I’ve read all the classic comics about Fantastic 4 and I don’t think this latest rehash bodes well for the franchise. It seems to me that the studio is just trying various tweaks to squeeze more bucks out of it without really investing in any more significant storytelling.

She-Hulk was a member of the FF at one point. There are probably other Marvel characters that were on the team (even if only briefly) too. The point is, at least IMO, it is inappropriate to start off a new project (movie or series) with a different roster of characters such as Shalla-Bal rather than Norrin Radd.

It’s just as inappropriate as starting a project (series or movies) with X-23 before introducing the original Wolverine and the original X-Men. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see an X-23 project (movie or series) but it shouldn’t exist in isolation. Build it up and then do it at the right time. Thankfully Wolverine and the X-Men have already been well established.

Similarly, Captain Marvel shouldn’t have started with Carol Danvers because everyone that read the comics knows the comic and the moniker started with Mar-Vell.
