[DVR] Motorola 7232 being phased out

It finally happened last night about 1:30 AM. They killed the old STB. This is SE PA west of Philly.

There was a notice that the box wasn’t working but nothing as to why. There was a number to call.

Tried the other one that was still on the old box and same thing. I let it sit for 5 hours and no change. Switched every thing over and we’re up and running.

Final tweak, I disconnected all the unused cables and reduced the splitter outputs to increase the signal. No idea if it helps but I feel better. 😃

Some observation on STB update.
I’m using the old IR remotes to make it easier to switch and the new remote is “too small”. One problem we noticed is that it’s very sensitive and you have to be quick or you’ll get double outputs and the wrong channel.
The picture is much better. Probably due to the automatic HD output selection.
When selecting a channel the new one is slower to come on. ( I remember others mentioning this)
For those with recording capability, I’m not sure what they were thinking. Selecting something to record is not too bad but getting the playback requires a number of button pushes and it not as intuitive as the old one. The DVR button on the old remote doesn’t work.
But, all done and working.

The delay in tuning a channel is probably my biggest complaint right now. I end up using the guide to channel-surf, which is just not the same.

The forced Dolby Vision is a bit annoying, but I’ve adjusted the picture settings on the TV to mostly compensate.
My box is on software version 1.3.69 and still they haven’t fixed it. I read on the Verizon forums that a fix is in the works though.

I don’t subscribe to DVR service, so I can’t comment on the differences there.

Looks like a 500GB 5.25″ AV class Seagate hard drive. Will pluck the one out of mine’s soon. I guess I can put it into another eSATA external drive enclosure. The old one that was connected to the 7232 as an expander will now have a younger brother. Two external drives that can now be repurposed elsewhere.

Given how small the current STBs are, they must be using either a 2.5″ hard drive or a SSD for data storage.

Anything reusable underneath the Cable Card?

The storage is in the Media Server not in the STB. AFAIK

Anything that Verizon gives you for TV service can be generally categorized as a STB.

I should have said DVR.
Since DVRs are an advanced version of STBs.
Not all STBs are DVRs.

Verizon’s name for DVRs now is Media Servers.

Hi, this is my first post here since DSLReports went dark.

Hoping this is the best thread for my question. For years, at home we’ve had two Verizon boxes (a STB and a DVR) plus two Windows Media Center PCs with Ceton Infiniti4 CableCARD tuners.

Once in a while during a Customer Support interaction, the CS rep will invite us to “upgrade” to their multi-room DVR. The thing is, my wife and I prefer our single-room, standalone boxes because we have different political viewpoints: this way, each of us can record the shows we like without getting the other annoyed by seeing a name we consider obnoxious. Having standalone recorders helps to keep the peace at home. 🙂

So far, we haven’t been pressured to switch away from our current setup, but I suspect that that dreaded day will eventually arrive. Does Verizon still offer standalone (not multi-room) boxes to record programming locally and that will be viewable only on the box where it’s recorded? I’ve been to Verizon’s website but navigating it is a nightmare.

FWIW, our current Verizon boxes say Arris IPC1100P2 on the front.

UPDATE: I made a mistake when listing the boxes we have. We do have one IPC1100P2, but the other box is a VMS1100. Let me know if this changes things.

Right now, it seems that Cisco and Motorola boxes are being replaced. Ours were replaced with the VMS1100ATV. So, it’s multiroom recording but you don’t have to watch what your wife records. Just what you record. The files will co-exist in the same box. 😃 Just don’t watch what your wife records.

EDIT: Just tried watching a different recording on 2 TV’s No Problems.

Thanks. The key is whether she would see on “her” box the listings for the stuff that I’d recorded on “my” box. If so, then it’s a no-go. I can tolerate seeing the titles that she records, but sadly it doesn’t work in the other direction as there would be instant, uh, “feedback.”

This is why I’m interested in two standalone recorders as opposed to a single common one for the whole house.

Right now she has the VMS1100 where she records stuff for the treadmill. I have the IPC1100P2 and (just checked) I can’t see what she’s recorded on the VMS1100. So I’m wondering if I could swap the IPC1100 for a second VMS1100 so that I can record too, and make it so that she can’t see what I’m recording just like I can’t see what she’s recorded.

Just an update. My Fios TV Plus boxes recently updated to 1.4.10. I haven’t noticed any changes.
There was also an update for the bluetooth remotes.

I just helped someone self-install a 4100P2 “Fios TV One” STB via COAX and a G3100 router. She called Verizon because her bill went up by $14, and she told them “she just couldn’t do it any longer”, so they told her if she upgraded her STB and router, there wouldn’t be any increase. According to the CSR, she will continue to be grandfathered in.

They left her speed at 75Mbps (she isn’t sure what the speed should be, but that’s what a speed test showed). She said she was fine with the speed, so I did not get into the possibility the ONT had to be switched from COAX to Ethernet. And, I won’t unless she mentions to me she should be getting 300Mbps.

They let her keep the G1100 router, so I took that as a backup for my G1100. CSR told her she could return the STB to a local Verizon store, who refused it because a UPS label had been printed. Fortunately, there was a UPS store nearby.

ETA: I was just thinking about the router install and it did have an ethernet cable attached to it from the wall along with COAX so maybe it is already connected that way for Internet. I did not look at the ONT.
