New article on the lawsuit here. Allan discusses the environmental disaster issues and the possibility of extended support and possible relaxing by Microsoft of Windows 11 upgrade restrictions but does not mention the bypasses that I’m sure he is aware of that of course can be used to upgrade machines that are perfectly capable of running 11 but are just not technically supported by Microsoft.

Many makers wanted people to buy new hardware for Microsoft’s new Vista OS.
They did not want people updating from XP without buying new products.
So they provided deliberately deficient Vista drivers for their older devices.
And harassed anyone who undercut their “business model”.

( A few devices have been supported by hackers and bounties,
usually when original hardware makers had long since gone out of business. )

IMHO, Microsoft should just have paid support for a reasonably small amount of money (i.e. $30/year) after the expiration of free support – that would:
1) help to defray the cost of providing updates
2) could render lawsuits like this moot

Creating patches most of the time would probably be just back porting fixes made for newer OSs, so it wouldn’t take that much of an effort – probably just a couple of devs and a few testers.

Security patches usually don’t involve “OS design” issues – those are normally fixed between major OS versions, or perhaps relatively early on in the life of a given OS.

If you look at the complaint here it prays for Public Injunctive Relief, so it would affect users across the board. While I’m not entirely brushed up on my class action credentials, it is similar in that it applies to a group of people but in this case is the public in general. That is slightly different from a typical class action that applies to members in a more specific situation and not the public generally. If the relief prayed for is granted it will have a similar effect but to the public generally and therefore classifying it as a class action is probably not the correct approach and could be more limiting.

MS originally promised Win10 as a continuous service and that people wouldn’t have to upgrade to a new version of Windows ever again. Then along came 11 and business as usual resumed. I say it’s time to make these corpos honor the promises they make!

This is true.

It was even commented at the time, the parallel to Star Trek’s Warp 10, which was supposed to be the maximum possible Warp factor.

I’m the last one here who would ever defend Microsoft but you have to concede something sometimes even to your enemies, and the matter of fact is that Windows 10 being the “last version” of Windows was never official policy. There was just one comment by one person one time and again it was never official policy nor was it even ever repeated. See: Why is there a Windows 11 if Windows 10 is the last Windows?

Microsoft representatives never said that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows—not really. That comment was actually made by Jerry Nixon, a Microsoft developer evangelist who spoke at the company’s ”Tiles, Notifications, and Action Center” presentation about Windows 10 at Microsoft’s Microsoft Ignite conference in 2015, and according to the transcript of the session, Nixon’s comment was more of a throwaway line, one that he literally referred to as a segue.

codezer0 Linux works. It just didnt work for you or works for every. Linux is great for servers and can be great on a desktop depending on usage. Example the Steam Deck. However Linux doesnt always work in every situation OR at least doesnt work with the ease of Windows.
