He wants Microsoft to keep supporting Windows 10 until its market share drops below 10%

Many are unhappy about Microsoft’s Windows 10 retirement plans, but a California man appears to be angrier than most. He’s sued Redmond over the matter, and is demanding continued free Win 10 updates until the OS’s popularity wanes.

They deserve it for having the artificial restrictions on upgrading to 11 and thus forcing upgrading to Windows 11 and thus forcing the unnecessary dumping of countless systems perfectly capable of running Windows 11 into landfills with the associated environmental nightmare. I wonder whether Klein is aware of the bypasses that were actually created non-publicly by Microsoft that would allow him to upgrade his machines to 11. If so, he should not only pray for relief that the restrictions be removed but that if not that the workarounds that Microsoft themselves created to allow 11 installs on unsupported systems to work be permitted to keep working.

And MS knows that if there are continued free Windows 10 updates, the popularity will NOT wane for a long time….

….Until enough of the old computers running older Windows need to be physically replaced with new Windows 11 machines.

Why should it? MS is just pushing their weight around, forcing upgrades sooner than in the past when it is neither needed nor desired. If companies want to survive the desires of their customers are what should determine their choices but since Microsoft managed to weasel their way out of any repercussions after being judicially determined a monopoly they can play by their own rules and get away with this type of dictatorship. They say it’s about security but as I posted above they never really enforced what they claim their goals for that were by not only tolerating but creating the very bypasses to run 11 on any machine with the power to do so. Since 80% of revenue from 11 licenses is from purchases of new machines with it preinstalled, is this just a guise to just sell more Windows 11 licenses, not to mention that the environment be damned? Furthermore, since probably many not so savvy users are aware of the bypasses, this prays on the ignorant who are typically in less of a financial position to afford new, not to mention unnecessary, hardware.

The competition is there only technically, and is not a practical choice for the vast majority of the user base, either from the perspective of affordability (Mac), or user-friendliness (Linux), and particularly as I said with the less fortunate and less savvy, respectively, who are the primary victims of their scheme.

Would the people who have been using and those who migrated to some flavor of Unix or iOS or Android would agree with you? Exactly what’s preventing you and “the vast majority” from departing from Windows because of Microsoft’s behavior? If it’s so painful why antagonize yourself?
I’ve had to replace hardware because the manufacturer hasn’t provided updated drivers. I guess Microsoft is the bad guy not the hardware manufacturer.

The “vast majority” don’t know much and therefore use the only thing they know–Windows. The painful part is not sticking with something you know but learning something foreign that is not Windows. I’m just talking about PCs, not phones, because none of this discussion applies to mobile devices. Microsoft tried to have a Windows phone and a media device (Zune) but they both failed.

But learning is inherently fun too. ( Video-games depend on that. )

The competition has gradually been getting less unfriendly.
And some people are leery of low-ball pricing with nickel-and-dime games.

I’m not talking about me but about the average Joe who is not only less savvy but hasn’t the time or inclination to part from his familiar Windows OS. Personally it would not be a problem for me but thus far the bypasses have all worked for my unsupported hardware, so I have not gone down the other road. I’m glad that this lawsuit was filed–it’s been a long time coming that someone challenge Microsoft’s arrogance with Windows 11 and opens up at least a slight possibility that things could change for the benefit of millions of users who might otherwise needlessly suffer.

Somewhat-Reticent Sir, with all the respect I can muster, that product line has existed for checks notes twenty years and more and they still can’t get it right. It’s basically got me in a bind from even having an open source out because apparently all the millions of users, redditors and discord mods can’t get it together and get this crap working right.

I’m past the point of being patient and bitter about it for all the ways besides this that Linux has made my life actively worse. I’m only holding my tongue because of dedicated Linux tools that enable stuff like successfully rescuing an Xbox hard disk. Seems all it can do is single purpose environments and servers. But to be a usable environment for me? No, apparently I’m not allowed to have that.

Somewhat-Reticent If one dude in China was able to not only fix the stock drivers Creative spat out for Vista and the like and continue to support the entire product line all the way up to Windows 11, complete with qualifying driver signatures, the half million on any given distribution really don’t have a valid excuse to have completely ignored the problem across two decades.

Seriously, it is an absolute achievement what Daniel K has done for such users, and will say without hesitation that he will be missed by the time we start talking about new OS’s where his work just can’t be (re)used anymore. But at least he retired from it on his terms.

Creative’s support refusal was purposeful, some of it over licensing which Creative pays for. They want to sell new products, not endlessly support old products for free, and they don’t want to support Linux at all. Yet, that hasn’t prevented some Linux distributions like Ubuntu from having basic Creative sound card drivers for some models pre-installed.
