I think this article perfectly summed it up
I wouldn't say it perfectly sums it up as I'm pretty sure I nailed it but it does offer up a point that falls under the umbrella of 'clever writing' in that they don't seem to have it.
As the article suggests, we were simply thrusted us into a situation with all these characters who've had all their long standing issues whereas the original Suits provided us a protagonist who was 'fresh' in the legal world, someone we could latch on to, to carry us through the story.
This situation could have worked for us if we had more jokes segueing us into the situation but unfortunately that's not what happened.
