New OTA channels

As I was channel scrolling on my TV today I noticed several new channels showed up. RF channel 3 with 4 subchannels. 3.1 shows as 720 HD while the other 4(3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5) show as 480i. 3.1 displays CATCHY 3.2 displays MeTV Toons 3.3 displays MeTV + 3.4 displays MOVIE 3.5 displays STORY I can find nothing showing on any of the local online station IDs. Hopefully this is new and will last. I’m in a major market with quite a few local stations including 6(or 7) NextGen.

Jbob What version Tablo? The older Legacy (black case) do not support MPEG4 video. More and more stations are using it for subchannels since they can cram more into the bandwidth.

Jbob

Andyross It’s the Legacy model. It’s not even picking up the main HD channel.

OzarkEdge I trust most readers here will have no trouble understanding that I was commenting about my broadcast TV experience, not yours.

I’m sure the other user would read your post the way you wrote it, which isn’t the same as what you corrected. I’m sure we both appreciate you correcting your mistakes.

OzarkEdge I did not mean bail out as in a handout or government subsidy, if that is what has you so focused.

I have no idea what you’re talking about, how did government subsidies enter into the conversation and what does that have to do with the advertisements you don’t like?

To be frank, the government did give everyone and their brother a converter box when we went from Analog to Digital. Honestly that will likely be the only way ATSC 3.0 is adopted. Because with TV’s with the new tuner costing upwards of $200+ more and gateway devices not working, it makes it harder for lower income people cord cutters/trimmers to justify the cost. I wont pay more for a TV with an ATSC 3.0 tuner. Id go streaming only. Maybe invest in some DVD’s and Blurays for my favorite shows/movies, because rights change so often.

Jbob Funny my TV tuner is picking up these new broadcasts however my Tablo Quad, connected to same antenna, does not show up in the lineup.

I ran a scan for kicks and unfortunately it mostly brought in a pile of new TV shopping channels along with a new gameshow channel. In my neck of the woods we have WPXJ broadcasting 9 subchannels over channel 51 (Ion, CourtTV, Defy, Laff, Ion Plus, Busted, Game Show Central, QVC, and ShopLC).

Sadly no new movies, toons, or comedy stations.

Maybe… but maybe not. I expect the majority of people watching these stations are low income folks. That and I never expected I’d be watching Family Ties again in my life.

It’s been stated that there is no planned subsidy this time as, unlike with the 2009 DTV transition, the transition to ATSC 3.0 is voluntary and there will not be a subsidy program for the distribution of ATSC 3.0-compatible equipment.

It’s not voluntary if they sunset 1.0 broadcasts.

A check shows that KKME-LD is owned by Weigel, which is why it is all of their own channels.

For the Tablo, it may not show up because it is not yet in their database.

Jbob

Andyross That makes me wonder then about how the Tuner actually works. Does it pick up OTA signals whether they’re in a database or not? I have a topic on the Tablo forums now.

Donut417

Jbob it does pick up the channels. Because my Plex server can see several channels not in the data base but can’t tune in. If I tune in directly from my HD Homerun i can watch the channels.

Jbob

I did a manual Rescan again today and this time it picked up all the new channels. Perhaps it took a while for the EPG to get populated.

Donut417

Jbob It does take a while. I know when new channels appear for me, it takes Plex some time to update their database. I think MeTV Toons took a few months in fact.
