As much as the “city level” is a determining factor, neighbourhood/area is also as much of a determining factor. Just like any city - London has areas that are…. rough… where property crime, violent crime, illicit weapons, etc will be far more represented than other parts of the city. Here in Kingston, there are two specific areas where you would be “nervous” to leave a car parked on a street over night, or walk around and loiter after dark alone – and even then 90% of the time you would be fine as the vast majority of crimes when looking through the actual police reports are “people known to one another” (drug deals gone bad, crimes of desperation, areas where homeless folks get targeted by other n’er-do-well folk, etc). But these areas are always heavily over-represented in the crime stats while the rest of the city is generally as safe as you could get. Sometimes it can even be “finer grained” than that - a few specific apartments/houses/buildings in a specific neighbourhood in a specific city in a specific province may represent an inordinate number of the reported crimes – not to say bad begets bad, but, it does seem persons of illicit repute do tend to congregate.

Did my undergrad there in the early 90’s and can also confirm there were sketchy areas back then.

Even the sketchy parts are gentrifying. My cousin owns a house that’s spitting distance from the Kellogg plant, and it’s a very different neighbourhood today than it was a decade ago.

I know. 🙂 But it’ll always be the Kellogg plant to me. Kind of like how if you go to Newfoundland and ask for directions, they’ll tell you to turn left at Bill’s house, even though Bill died 20 years ago and the place is now owned by his kids who rent it out as an airbnb

taraf Massive money has gone into that plant and its turned into a rather good entertainment district for adults (hardrock cafe, open markets) and kids(children’s Museum), and also kid adults (beer, spirts, food, climbing stuff).

There are now plans to build more towers (residenental) around the area as the land value has increased, the current proposal done by the same group that owns the Factory includes some raised walkways in and out of the Factory. Overall unlike the endless Farhi* bullshit of talk and promises which at best has turned into 30+ year old temporary parking lots and empty, unused buildings, this developer actually has functional goals.

*FARHI’s name is on half the buildings in the core, he is a person that acquires and then sits on property while occasionally suggest ways public money can be used to fix up his property for his benefit.
