So, my building requires an electronic bin for recycling. On occasion I’ve had to toss a few things and have gotten a look what’s in there. Not really exciting stuff but I figured that some of you might like to take a look see. So here goes:

Octavean OK, so I had to toss out some AA batteries and a couple of old remotes for VCR’s I no longer have.

A little nerdy tech note, a lot of the older IR remote controls could be reprogrammed for other manufacturers. I had an elderly relative that knew how to work her Panasonic remote control but her son replaced her TV with an NEC so using the pin header I replaced some of the codes. If I recall correctly, all the big name TVs were reprogrammable through the pin header on the board.

I also swapped the guts of one of my remotes back when they were bigger because I liked another manufacturers better than my new TVs.

Little update, I went back to toss a few more batteries and take a closer look at the half laptop. Opened it up and everything was integrated into the motherboard. So no RAM or SSD could be pulled.

Reading some of the comments here, I’d have to say yeah I get it. I have to toss some stuff too. I typically don’t toss PC hardware though. Not unless it’s very old. For our recreational home we swapped out an electric dryer for gas and the old one has been sitting in the garage for over a year. I need to get rid of it.

But you never known when you’ll need that spare : )) ..

I have a big screw jar in the basement where all spare screws are collected. I readily admit, I’m likely to never use more than 3% of those screws .. BUT, & this is key, I don’t know which 3% : )).

I’m increasingly guilty of feeling compelled to have spares & backups. Right now I’m trying to chase down a hard-to-get Ocean Digital WR-336F (or N) internet radio (not the M model). I’ve already got 2 that I actively use & the combination of features is a bit unique & perfectly meets my needs. So the “chase” is part of the fun.

g121 Yeah, everything is a balance though. If holding on to something creates some limitations then some reevaluation might be in order. If I can’t pull my car into my garage because of a dryer I’m not ever going to use again, that’s a fact that gets reconsidered nearly every weekend.

I can totally see hanging onto a jar of screws though. I’d probably put them in an organizing tray by size instead but I get it.

Over the years I saved a lot of salsa jars, carefully peeled the labels off, then I paid my nephew an inconsequential amount of money (for me, not him) to dump all the random screws from the bigger screw jars / tins / cans and sort all my screws into jars. Once I saw how many screws I had of each type in the jars, I sourced an organizational means of storing them… with labels!
