One Man’s Trash, is another Man’s Treasure

So, my building requires an electronic bin for recycling. On occasion I’ve had to toss a few things and have gotten a look what’s in there. Not really exciting stuff but I figured that some of you might like to take a look see. So here goes:

Somewhat-Reticent

One’s trash, another’s treasure, like at thrift shop or mined for metal.

I have a friend who was working at a local manufacturing facility. He would occasionally check out the recycle bin for old computer parts. He brought me quite a few Dell and HP systems that were completely functional albeit quite dirty from the environment they were in. Most were basic enough they weren’t much use however for modern computing tasks but were okay for a mom and pop basic computer function. Email, Youtube, web surfing, etc.

I’ve seen a few old MacBooks that were worth a closer look but most of what I’ve come across here in my building’s electronic bin didn’t seem worth a second look.

Where I work, we test, clean, refurbish networking equipment and more recently server enclosures. It always fun to see what ends up in our scrap gaylords or big lots we’ve purchased with a more assorted variety of tech things.

I miss my former tech employer’s etrash from a decade ago. Others and I would look to see what goods. I got free used PS/2 keyboards, mouses, an unopened external 56k Sportster dial-up modem, etc.

I got to have an Open House to get rid of my trash. ummm, I mean Treasures.

New dump! Last time I checked there was a Guitar hearo guitar, a V3FX Racing Wheel 2 steering wheel (probably PS2), a hoverboard, a cable box and a couple of laptops. The laptops looked like the cheap HP sale stuff and they also looked like they removed the optical drive as well as the battery. So there was probably nothing worth having in those laptops. I have pix if people are interested.

OK, so I had to toss out some AA batteries and a couple of old remotes for VCR’s I no longer have. This means a trip to the bin in the backyard. There wasn’t much in there this time, probably just after they collected it. There was one old looking laptop, what looked like a small portable cathode ray tube TV and a half a laptop that looked fairly new (monitor portion was missing).

It later occurred to me that I probably should have taken a look at the half laptop because it looked new and could have had SODIMM DDR4 or DDR5 still in it and possibly an SSD.

Where’s my screwdriver set,….?

I just went through this, BIG time.
We had the basement undergo “mold remediation” I was so tired of all the problem and getting someone to do it that I said “TAKE IT ALL” sigh all sorts of parts, cables, computer parts. They did loaded a truck with all the $$$ crap.

Now, I’m buying what was once there.

Being an old man growing up in New England I remember everyone’s cellar, attic, and garage was filled with stuff that was never thrown out because one day it might be needed. A 40 year old 1 foot long 2×4, a box with half a dozen 30 year old grinding wheels, a jar filled with rusty nails. Now it’s a PS/2 keyboard or mouse, a 5.25 floppy disc drive that doesn’t get disposed of.
