With all due respect, most people in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio would typically identify as living in the midwest.
I’ve typically considered Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa to be midwest as well. If I had to be specific, I’d say “upper midwest” when referring to Minnesota and Wisconsin, and possibly Michigan – at least for the UP. The Census Bureau apparently includes North Dakota and South Dakota, too.
