So I made an Official complaint to the FCC as i have not seen anything over 800 Mbps for over the last year with speed tests between 300 -800. That is using X speed test and speedtest.net using 3 different local servers hardwired and wireless. Comcrap contacted me and i sent screen shots of both wired and wireless and this was the reply to the speeds between 300 and 800. Good Morning Ken, Thanks for the clarification. From what I can see your speed results don’t seem that far out of spec. Wi-Fi speeds vary and there are many factors involved. How fast? My record is 100-105 Mbps with a 20 Mhz channel width on the 2.4 Ghz band.

lesmikesell Yeah… Really would have to be set up professionally. Ensuring non-over lapping channels, disabling 2.4 and 5 Ghz as not every single AP will need them, lowering transmit power, etc.

The average user will never do this or even know how/what this all is.

I managed to get my ethernet port working again on motherboard, which i am very happy about

Though typically i stick to using The 2.5gig Ethernet wired connection

Despite live in a Townhome, all devices don’t have signal issues or drops or anything with XB8 Gateway

Wi-Fi 7 increases that even more.

A lot of them are on the same channel (individual stores in the mall with their own wireless networks). But, the Wi-Fi was still working. Doesn’t BSS coloring in the 802.11ax standard help with this? Even if multiple AP’s are on the same channel, they can take turns transmitting to avoid collisions and re-transmits (packet loss on the client device).

Devious I can pick up the signal from my neighbors XB8 2 houses over with -60 to -70 db on the 2.4 Ghz band. 5 Ghz is in the -74 to -80. Granted it is a straight shot over with only the exterior of our homes in the way of the signal. The neighbor next to me has his home set back further, so straight shot through 2 exterior walls. I have been over before so that is how I know where the XB8 is located inside of their home.

My neighbor a few blocks away down the road is still using an XB3 on the 800 Mbps tier. (Started out at 200 Mbps, but speed increases over the years increased it). I need to encourage him to upgrade his gateway. But even streaming on multiple screens in 4K along with general smartphone use works fine on the XB3). Sub-split node, so no enhanced upload speeds to be taken advantage of.

Can You Have Too Many WiFi Routers?

So you have a pretty small house. And I doubt that’s on 5/6GHz, and with top speeds in each room.

Yeah, but I bet if you actually connected to it, latency would be high, and speeds would be pretty slow.

The farther away you are, your speeds drop significantly.

Even being a room or two away from the AP, your speeds might drop by half, or more on 5/6GHz.

There are enough non-overlapping 5 and 6GHz channels that it shouldn’t be an issue at all.

There’s enough 6GHz for 14 non-overlapping 80MHz channels, or 7 non-overlapping 160MHz channels.

XB gateway’s even do this surprisingly, but they only choose channel 44 or 157. The XB6/XB7/XB8 are also DFS certified with the FCC, but Xfinity does not use DFS channels. Could be because of the downsides, limited range due to DFS transmit power limits, and some wireless clients do not support DFS channels, which would cause these specific clients to drop down to 2.4 GHz. Gen 2 xFi Pods are also DFS certified.

Also, doesn’t the FCC want to take away some of the 6 GHz channels now? Great, less Wi-Fi spectrum.

Some people also care so much about speed rather than stability (especially home users!), and will crank the 2.4 GHz channel width to 40 MHz, and the 5 GHz channel width to 160 Mhz. Then we wonder why Xfinity locks away the Advanced Wi-Fi settings like channel selection and channel width settings.

Yeah, professional installs at universities and airports often do this, but at the expense of speed.

20MHz is pretty extreme I think especially with DFS channels, but the massive amount of 6GHz spectrum makes this unnecessary now.

They approved auctioning 200MHz (of 1,200MHz) for 5G, but there’s no guarantee they will.

60GHz mmWave is also an option.

Is there where the “46 Gbps” max speed comes from? Of course, Wi-Fi being half duplex, you can cut the 46 Gbps figure in half. So 23 Gbps. (in a lab, of course). Might be including Multi Link Aggregation as well (requires clients to support it I believe). But it allows the client to bond the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz together. Or just the 5 and 6 GHz, etc.

Some do. None of Apple’s products ever supported 40MHz on 2.4GHz or 160MHz on 5GHz, and it seems like few wireless routers do also.

Yeah, but MLO makes it unnecessary to run a 320MHz channel of 6GHz, and again client devices currently don’t support that.

The iPhones right now are limited to just 160MHz on Wi-Fi 7.

I doubt any routers will be set to 320MHz out of the box.

Typically the best choice will be 160MHz of 6GHz + 80MHz of 5GHz using MLO.

The iPhone currently only supports Enhanced Multilink Single‐Radio (EMLSR), which means it only uses one band at a time, not both simultaneously.

So the iPhone’s Wi-Fi 7 speeds right now are identical to Wi-Fi 6E.

I would expect the iPhones announced later this year should improve that with newer chipsets.
