We you on the old dsl forum? I sort-of remember a years-long discussion of someone trying to get service installed in a location that was counted as served. Don’t remember if it ever happened.

lesmikesell The FCC data is reported by the ISPs. If the ISP incorrectly reports a location as served, you can flag it as incorrect and the FCC will look into it and remove it from the map if it’s wrong.

But looking up a few dozen of my family and friend’s houses, I haven’t seen an incorrect one yet.

Well it doesn’t show any fiber in my neighborhood yet even though I see AT&T fiber trucks working nearby so I guess that’s honest. Astound and Xfinity are the only providers with a gig or more.

lesmikesell Yeah, the map is only updated twice a year. The current data is from June 2025.

It should be updated in the next few weeks to data from December 2025.

So it’s always going to be 6+ months out of date.

There has been fiber passing my house since the 90’s at least, underground in 5 hardened conduits built to connect NIKE (the missiles, not the shoes) sites via copper in the cold war (now all civilian use and converted for fiber) and arial for cell towers and e-school use with a few dedicated $$$ lines. however this rural stretch is still 2 to 20 acre lots for now for the most part and consumer residential has not been offered … or as I said it has been offered but when you try to get it they suggest DSLsatellite HFCcellular instead Comcast has always been the best speed choice for consumer availability on speed and price basis since 2003-4 and offer 2gig here.
Once they change the zoning IT will be chopped up into tiny lots or HOA controlled megaplexs and all the modern (fiber, sewer, etc) will be forced down our throats along with the bills, noise, and lack of privacy some see as necessary for life.

The FCC map doesn’t show business Metro-E fiber, it only shows residential fiber like GPON or XGS-PON for residential homes.

I’m a situation myself were fiber is available about 1200 ft from my house. The houses only really on the main road and few other loops have FTTH service. Consolidated Communications now branded Fidium never came back to finish the upgrade job leaving my street and about half the neighborhood still on their old copper infrastructure which was serving internet access via DSL before abandoning the technology 6 years ago.

Even though it’s no longer used the big DSLAM cabinet still sits fully powered up as you can hear the fans inside running when walking by on the sidewalk where it’s located on the main road across from the park. It has me wondering how much they’ve been needlessly spending on electricity all this time. It’s not like you can even get phone service on those lines anymore lol

You are supposed to be able to dial 911 on copper wires even if they aren’t activated for any other service. Don’t know if that applies to old DSL lines, though.

That was BiggA in CT. The local telco (Frontier) didn’t serve his apartment and he argued it has to because of the tariff, but Cox served the complex which satisfied the COLR. He thought the tariff meant the telco HAD TO service his home. He escalated with the telco, who said no unless they paid thousands. He took it to PURA for CT, who shot it down. When it was finally explained to him the tariff was, and that it didn’t REQUIRE they service his apartment, he finally gave up.

MacLeech To be fair, I agree with him somewhat there. Requiring a SSN and a credit check for a $50 internet subscription is very silly.

Why would an ISP or wireless carrier require a credit check?

Unless you’re financing a smartphone with them, I don’t understand the logic there.

If they don’t pay their bill, suspend the service. It’s that simple. Why would that require a credit check?

No one’s asking for a $10,000 credit line here lol it’s a $50 monthly bill. I’ve never understood why they did credit checks.

GHz-Man BiggA never got the DSL service at that apartment because Frontier didn’t service the location. His whole issue about SSN was pointless. He later spent years fighting Frontier and the utilities commission for service based on rules he didn’t understand.

Phone bills are used as proof of residence for other things so phone companies are liable to spend more effort to verify who you are. It’s not just about the money.

MacLeech Regardless, most ISPs (until recently I guess) used to require a SSN/credit check to sign up for postpaid service.

That’s why Comcast and others introduced their prepaid years ago.

It’s a bit silly when you’re just getting a cable subscription, not financing a $1,000 smartphone.

I haven’t signed up for postpaid in a while, but apparently they’ve relaxed a lot of those requirements in recent years.

GHz-Man Phone ID requirements were different than ISP or mobile, which many places didn’t accept as proof of residence or secondary ID verification like phone bills had been used for decades. Again it wasn’t about the money.

Cable did it because they wanted their cable boxes back. They were a few hundred each when they came out and customers often had several of them.

GHz-Man They definitely have. I signed up using my partner’s info today and Comcast only wanted confirmation of my partner’s birthday to complete the order. No SSN and we both keep our credit reports on ice which means no soft pull either.

Mosaic Good to know. If we ever go back to post paid the account will likely be in my name. I also have my credit under a freeze.
