Does Charter cap gigabit differently in regions?

So I used to have a 1160 megabit cap on my download. I had it this way for about 6 moths after speaking with retention and going with fios. I noticed this cap was pretty much being hit nightly on my side. No problem. Then one night my modem rebooted and my cap then and now has been 100megabits exactly lower at 1060 download. I have 0 issues with my cabling or connection. I have a 2.5gig nic and my modem has a 2.5gig nic in it as well. This was not an issue for half a year. Has anyone else noticed this with their gig connection? Makes me wonder if my headend is doing this for management of the network in my region. I find it funny that it is exactly 100 megabit less than what I used to get back when they offered me a better rate from going with verizon.

Man-of-Leisure Verizon NG-PON2 is a built as an overlay network, not sharing the OLTs, muxes, or customer ONUs. I think much of the backhaul from the CO OLTs is through different equipment too. That older equipment is still hanging around taking up space, power, HVAC, and manpower to keep running with active customers that won’t switch. That’s the “clean up house” part needed.

MacLeech I thought the appeal of NG-PON2 was supposed to be a very easy upgrade from GPON and backwards compatibility.

According to Smith, the Verizon NG-PON2 decision was driven, in large part, by the company’s experience with having to upgrade to GPON beginning in 2008, just four years after beginning to deploy BPON.

“That experience of having to continually overlay your network with the next version of technology is what ultimately lead us to NG-PON2,” he said.

Verizon is deploying NG-PON2 as an overlay to existing GPON networks and can use existing fiber because GPON uses a different wavelength. Eventually, the company expects to upgrade its entire Fios footprint to NG-PON2, Smith noted.

Man-of-Leisure It is backwards compatible when planned for. For example, if the optical muxes on either end don’t have the optical channel ports for the NG-PON2 frequencies you have to replace them, taking down all customers in the mux and splitters attached during their replacement. Verizon decided to use open fibers to a new mux and splitter instead which takes more fibers and space.

OLTs are another matter. The ones originally installed for BPON or GPON in the COs weren’t designed with NG-PON2 ports in mind so they need replacement or new units installed along side the older ones. Same with the ONUs (ONTs) at the customer home.
