Man-of-Leisure My understanding is that Verizon is still trying to get the 2Gbps service deployed and to be solid. NGPON2 with those tunable lasers is incredibly expensive compared to what other providers are using with GEPON and XGS-PON. After talking about this exact topic with a Verizon tech a few weeks ago, Verizon is still trying to “clean up house” of all of the old BPON and Motorola OLT Platforms, a lot of which refuses to die, or customers which haven’t made any change that would trigger an ONT swap-out.
As for the rest of the topic, I know everyone is talking about large Cloud backups. Why not talk about something more realistic? These days with RCS Messaging on cell phones, it’s pretty easy for people to need to upload 20-100MB of data in bursts just from sending people a message. RCS will go over Wi-Fi unless someone is on Mobile Data, and that’s the “make-it or break-it” experience when it comes down to how snappy and fast something feels. 40Mbps upload can get a 100MB attachment sent in under a minute, but at 10Mbps it definitely takes a hot minute, and that can be agonizingly slow for some people. RCS Messaging will definitely avoid re-compressing a video attachment if it uses a common codec, and it is under the 100MB limit.
As for Spectrum adjusting the over-provisioning numbers, I have seen some of this on and off elsewhere. Not locally in the Buffalo/WNY Suburban Market. I did notice that Spectrum has adjusted the upload speeds on Business packages, where Ultra is hitting 35Mbps and Gig now hits about 50-52Mbps. I checked the Rate Card and found that Spectrum has dropped the estimated download rate to just over 1Gbps.
