Back in the day (> 2000) I was a very active user on DSLR. One of the first members who joined the Team Helix board that had just formed 1-2 days earlier.
I was also a mod for a couple of years (until ~'06 IIRC) of the General Distributed Computing forum.
After my years at university, "life happened" and I ocasionally visited the site and lurked around.
For some reason, DSLR/BBR always felt like a home. A place that partially made me reminisce on how the internet used to be before it was truly captured by big tech and in particular social media.
So today I found myself wanting to stop by again... seeing that it was all suddenly gone. All the contacts, the IM buddies, the familiar names, avatars and icons.
I'm quite shocked that it was apparently taken offline without any notice, time for closure, exchanging contact information, etc. at all.
We had already lost quite a few wonderful people along the way, who were remembered by many and who were listed on the DC Honor Guard page. Suddenly I find myself mourning for the site and a era of the internet that used to be.
