MacLeech People also don’t like buying content multiple times, so a free upgrade to 4K is more attractive to people than buying a movie possibly for the 4th time (VHS/LaserDisc > DVD > Blu-Ray > 4K)
By the mid-2000s my parents already had a large VHS collection, so we never made the jump to DVD. They were still releasing movies on VHS until 2005-2006, and on a CRT you couldn’t see much of a difference compared to DVD anyway.
By then HD was becoming popular, so we got an HDTV and On Demand from Comcast was already pretty popular, so we just started renting movies that way until eventually getting an Apple TV. My parents were amazed you could just rent a movie at the press of a button lol
Apple upgrades all of your HD purchases to 4K for free as they’re re-mastered, so no need to buy things multiple times.
