Hydraglass The facts are that Indian gangs exists in Canada, that the Indian government has run operations in Canada with links all the way to the top, but from the story it doesn’t appear the three were part of some minority, are part of a currently unpopular religious movement back in their homeland, or had been shaken down by some criminal group. Suicide is too common in India (and elsewhere for that matter), a move into what probably feels like a very isolated foreign place certainly isn’t going to help with depression.
Depression/mental illness (as well as abuse) are common in India and made worse by certain cultural/religious trappings but seldom talked about openly. It’s all seen as defects/failures and such, weakness if you want a short answer. Despite wishful thinking and other people telling them to “get over it” does not actually treat or cure these issues.
Another thing is due to the climate our lakes and rivers are considerable colder than bodies of water in India, hypothermia is interesting in that as the heat of your body is sucked away you lose track of time, your limbs are numb, and heavy. Disorientation and weakness in water that is moving means that a person can be pulled down stream or pushed out further away from land or a reasonable chance of rescue. Plunging into cold water also is such a shock that one will gasp due to the intense sensation which has been described as being stabbed which often leads to aspiration of water into the lungs.
TLDR, depression and or drowning are high probabilities.
