Was Microsoft Born Yesterday or was it 50 years ago? After one refusal to update hiccup shortly after its release I had the problem that now has again reared its ugly head of not getting the most recent Office 2024 updates, with Update Now retrieving You’re up to date! despite there being a new update. Again, this original hiccup had to be eight or nine months ago, with it receiving all updates since. It even updated on my secondary desktop that is an exact clone of this main desktop where as explained it refuses to do so. Of course there is no way to do this manually like I remember there was with earlier Office versions but only through the Update Now internal process. BTW and beside the point, it’s also now set up as an all or nothing suite, with no way to add or delete selected apps like it also used to be. Maybe this is the next field to conquer after the Edge update problem?

Are people here getting the latest updates from Microsoft? If this keeps up I might just go back to my DOS based Office Suite, even though I have many others. 😂😂

As you know, LibreOffice, Thunderbird (etc) work well for free and get updates….

Ugh. I hated edlin. It reminded me of vi in Linux and UNIX! I prefer edit.com, pico/nano, etc. 😛

antdude I still use vi in linux daily - it’s much closer to DOS’s “edit” - where as edlin is like the linux/unix “ed” and “sed” tools – line based editors rather than file based editors. VI is positively glorious compared to edlin and ed – and it is universal - every implementation of unix/linux/bsd/etc out there almost universially has vi and :wq does the same exact thing on every one of them. I don’t want to live in a world without vi. (I do like pico though - there was a time in history I used pine as my email client and pico (PIne COmposer) was a common tool (most of the ’90s). To be fair, I never used edlin THAT much - but it was handy on barebones dos boxes that had little to nothing else on them (especially using DOS boot disks where you were trying to save space - edlin was a tiny little tool that only used a few kb) - and I still use it when editing autoexec.bat and config.sys files on old retro hardware (IBM XT era, booting from 5 ¼ floppy). I much prefer dos edit, and it is available still today and is even being brought back as a permanent part of Windows 11. https://www.theregister.com/2025/05/20/microsoft_edit_revived/ - it’s great when you’re working in cmd prompt or even powershell and need a fast script edit and don’t want to go fart around with NPP or Notepad.
