Astyanax Yes you do. Maybe you don’t need as many as we do but you need more competition. You need maybe at least one more.
We definitely need more competition in Canada and that link he shared was disingenuous.
Frequent flyers don’t care about “solving Canada’s aviation challenges”, they care about a better experience and lower prices.
Here’s a great example - a few years back we had Caribbean Airlines (previously known as Air Jamaica) and you could fly back and forth to the Caribbean for at least $200 cheaper than what Air Canada or Westjet was offering. To compete with this, Westjet created the value oriented Swoop airlines where you could hop on a plane with no baggage and a personal bag that was no larger than a purse or laptop bag, no carry-on unless you paid for it… and it was cheaper than Caribbean Airlines if you didn’t bring anything with you.
Competition forced Westjet to offer a service that was competitive (despite Swoop being horribly unreliable and 100% delayed with every flight).
Caribbean Airlines and a few other smaller international airlines disappeared within the last few years… oh, look at that, Westjet decided to fold up Swoop and prices are back to what they were before. Actually no, they’re worse now considering this thread.
We need competition.
