Stembolt gave up on the Doctor Who universe, so I’m sitting this one out.

After Tom Baker, there really was no point.

Though I do think Peter Capaldi was interesting.

Reviews are mixed based on the one’s I’ve been reading online. Using alternative methods, watched the first episode and it has its cringe moments. The opening scene (within the first 30 seconds or so) tells you it’s going to be an in your face environmentalism show. There was a pure cringe part later in the first episode that seemed like a disparaging shot a Christians that left me rolling my eyes. There are a few other story elements that some may see as ticking off the typical check boxes these days.

Not sure how this will play to an American or non UK audience after watching the first episode. Felt like the show is written for a very narrow audience beyond just the overt passing brief “The Doctor” tie in reference made in the first episode. Was left wondering just how many of those positive reviews were bought and paid for.

The second episode, predictably, is full on environmental storyline with humans destroying basically everything (land, sea, air). Some more characters/scenes will be seen as checking off the usual check boxes. It’s like they have a formula they have to, or required to, stick to for some of the scenes. Russell Tovey just feels miscast in this, or more likely his character was intentionally written as a wimpy weak “beta” guy and he’s struggling with how to act/portray the character. Some may enjoy the show. Personally just finding it Meh so far.

Sounds like more of the Who-verse drivel. I don’t bother watching anything from that franchise anymore. It’s always the same. They always use the ‘check box’ method of writing and casting. It’s the formula that the franchise is clinging to with a death grip.

I’m happy re watching the old classic episodes.

I pretty much said the same thing several years ago when the activism and box checking start to be a recurring theme. When episode after episode and season after season it just remained the same, I gave up hope. I’m sure there are viewers out there who are entertained by this stuff, I’m just not one of them.

Stembolt Well, my expectations are indeed low. However, if my expectations were so low that I didn’t think there was even the possibility of being entertained I probably wouldn’t even bother. I’m not quite there yet.

It was pretty much expected from the very start that there was going to be a “romance” between fish (female) and human (male) the second she appeared.

Haven’t seen episode 5 yet, but episodes 1 though 4 were fairly cringe.

Also just finished episode 5. Not surprised. More cringe. Whole lot of slapping you in the face, repeatedly, on how bad humans are and how they’re destroying the plant. More so than prior episodes. Not even going to bother putting this in a spoiler tag. I actually laughed out loud and rolled my eyes at the line about humans melting the ice caps for a very long time. As if nothing else in nature has ever caused ice caps to melt or damaged the seas… ever. Nope just humans bad. And yes the ending was seriously stupid corny with man and fish lady swimming in the water. Only to be topped off with a final scene with a gun wielding woman (UNIT director) drawing down on a white guy running along the beach who throws a water bottle onto the sand as trash and commands him (yelling several times) to pick it up at gun point.
