It’s about UNIT and the Sea Devils. Until it airs, hard to say how much back-story explanation there will be. According to Wikipedia, it will be 5 episodes.

This show is literally based on probably the worst Doctor Who episode to air in 20 years, the first episode to go way out there with activism writing to the point where many people cite the originating episode as their reason for leaving the show. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t just the ham-fisted activism that turned people off… the writing was so bad.

You don’t need to have watched the originating episode to ‘get’ this, the plot was razer thin.

I feel like the people who run BBC have zero experience running a business, they took one of the lowest rated episodes in a series that’s losing enough viewers to potentially trigger cancellation and decided to turn that into a new show? lolwat

I dropped out long before this episode. I couldn’t stomach the “activism”. From what I’ve seen of the recent seasons, it’s gotten much worse.

Dr. Who, begun in the 1960s, used to be an amusingly-droll TV adventure series, which ended in the 1980s due to declining viewer numbers. It was revived in the 21st century with higher budgets and lower originality, with hack writer Russell T. Davies; eventually the franchise spun out derivative shows in all directions.

I wouldn’t bother catching up if I were you.

“Way out activism”? It’s in the franchise’s genes! The second-ever story-line was solidly anti-fascist: the Daleks were space nazis bent on exterminating the peaceful Thals.
